[Current CMU Students] Internet connection?

Carnegie was the fist university to have a campus wide wireless network. They're running on t3, which is a 50 meg connection. They're also connected to internet2, which is very characteristic of CMU, back in the day, they were connected to ARPAnet. One of the origional hubs, in fact.

T3... I'd disagree with that - 45Mbps would make CMU's network crawl. CMU is pushes/pulls around 110Mbps over commodity internet at any given time (according to their network stats), with bursts of up to 170Mbps - That means that they're using way more than an OC3 (155Mbps). They also use up to 455Mbps over Internet2. CMU has a connection to the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (which they run) that provides bandwidth to CMU, UPitt, and a few other institutions. That network can use up to 1244Mbps of commodity internet, and 2.4Gbps of Internet2.

People have gotten busted for using internet2, and I don't think it's actually functional anymore. But yes, the wired internet connection is very fast. The wireless does cover the entire campus, but there are some places where the signal is pretty weak.

Busted for using i2Hub, not Internet2. Internet2 is a primarily research based network for connecting universities. i2Hub was a file sharing program that only worked on Internet2 universities. i2Hub doesn't exist anymore, however the last beta version they released still works if you can find a copy.

^ I wonder if I know you.....

Basic message: Internet here is insanely fast. I realized this painfully when I went home over winter break to my flaky cable modem connection.

Do I sound like the stereotypical CMU student? :D I don't go there, but my brother does.

yeah I was gunna sat "a single T3 and you think its fast? Theres no way!

anyway, just explaining how to not get caught, in a hypothetical situation, for those who need to know, freedom of speech and information and all that.

Also, I tend to get like 40-80kbps on torrents with about 10 - 20 seeders, and only sharing a max of 1kbps to 1 leecher. I've got a 3.5mbps (microwave) connection, so it isn't too detramental in terms of dl speeds.

anyone ever heard of mytunes redux. its a program that shares songs through itunes for free. anyone use it?

yup, thats what i was talking about earlier with the "from others itunes" thing...

works though, i've tried it. Though i tried it on v4 of itunes, not v6, so we'll see.
