Current Cornell Student: Ask Away!

Hey everyone. I'm a sophomore transfer student in ILR. I was in the same place as you a year ago asking the same questions. So now if anyone has any Cornell-related questions (except chances) I'll be happy to answer them. You can PM me also if you want to ask privately.

yeah, i'm wondering what its like to be a transfer student at cornell. im pretty sure i wont get in, even ED, as a high school student, and cornell is the only school that offers a competitive hotel management program. I was hoping i could apply to a less competitive school for my first year, then transfer to cornell.
Was it at big impact on your social life? Was it easy to get in? etc...

Ok this is going to sound chauvinist/shallow or whatever, but is it true that there are no hot chicks in cornell? I mean 13,000 undergrads I was hoping that there would be some pretty women

lieutenantlard: yeah transferring is pretty cool and it is less competitive than as a freshman applicant. if you don't get in now and decide to transfer as sophomore just make sure you stay in constant contact with cornell so they know you're interested

PRiSM92289: there are definitely hott girls here at cornell. it's not as if every single girl is hott but there are a fair amount of hott girls here. it was especially good this past weekend with everyone celebrating halloween

I am 100% certain there was at least one super hot chick who graduated around 1977 - not sure about other classes

lieutenantlard:
I transferred in to the hotel school myself and would say that it's a pretty easy social transition since everyone here is really friendly. The classes aer phenomenal and the profs are cool, but I'm not so sure about the idea of going to a "less competitive school" first then transferring in. Contrary to popular belief, hotelies actually work really hard here. I work at the hotel about 16 hours/week on top of a demanding class schedule, but others are known to do 30 hours a week on a regular basis so be prepared!

leigh787,
what made you want to go to hotel school?
what made you want to go to hotel school at cornell?
do you feel segregated from the rest of the student body at hotel school? or perhaps each school at cornell is its own little world?
is it possible to double major, or minor outside of hotel school?
is it possible to do a semester/year abroad?
how easy is it to go to NYC or Boston for a weekend?
thanks,
chalam

-There are some hot girls but not too many. Any top school is going to have that problem though.

-Each individual school at cornell does not feel segregated at all.

-It is not worth it to go to NYC or Boston for a weekend because the bs ride is too long to be there for such a short period of time.

are there hot asian girls?

are there hot asian girls?

xD i dunno because i dont go there :P but when i went to the open house and started walking around, i saw a few that were decent. Nothing like 'OMG' :) but some decent ones :)

I'm not really into Asian girls but there are some hot ones.

Just in gernal about girls, if you want to hook up with a good amount of girls your going to have lower your standards to under hot. Cornell parties are usually great but there is no girls gone wild here.

chalam:
Wanting to go to the hotel school has a lot to do with the kind of life I personally lead, what with living in 5 countries etc. But really, choosing cornell had a lot to do with the beauty of the campus itself. :p

Hardly feel segregated, but that might be because I'm so busy doing things within the hotel school that I don't really notice. shrug

Overally don't get the feeling that each college here is in its own little world.

Sorry, but no double majoring/minoring in hotel. Semester/year abroad is very common. Some very cool options available!

how easy it is to go out of town really depends on the kind of activity you're involved in. Some classes/clubs in the hotel school BRING you to NYC to experience the restaurant entrepreneurial stuff first hand (that and Atlantic City as part of the Casino Management field trip). But I digress. I think what you really want to know is whether it's convenient to leave Ithaca-- and it theoretically isnt at all since all the coaches stop on campus to whisk you away. Like in Nov I'll be in NYC twice which really isnt too bad :)

Hope that helps.

Hey im interested in transferring to the ILR school as sophomore next year. What would you say makes a strong ILR candidate, and would you say ILR is more math/science oriented?

wewt:

I was a sophomore transfer into ILR too. It is great. During your first year of college just make sure you stay in constant contact with Cornell and ask them what classes you should take at your current school so that they can transfer over easily. Definitely take Macro and micro economics. To be a strong ILR candidate just show that you're actually interested in labor relations in your essay. And no ILR is not math or science oriented at all. You only need to take one science and one math (ILR statistics) class. ILR is economics, history, and labor based.

if you want hot asian girls you better be asian because the asians here only chill with their own kind. true story, mcdillon

bongoboy, NAH SON. ite, go to a coupla lambda parties wit your asian friends. meet a few asian girls, and the rest is up to you.

the more important question is, HOW THE F CAN I TRANSFER TO AEM? im gonna force the issue by taking all AEM classes.. a bit risky but hopefully they bite.
how does AEM 210, AEM220, PAM200 look?

Ok, I've had enough about girls. Are there hot asian GUYS?

if i get in ;)

jk jk ^^

anyone else have any questions?

Parent here. How is life in the West Campus houses? Do people like it there? Do they find the requirement to be on a house meal plan too restrictive?
