Current Freshmen Answering Questions

It seems like just yesterday that I was in your shoes - waiting for letters, comparing stats, and practically living on this website. Since my first semester at Duke is over, I thought I could be of some help by answering questions about life here.

My Stats:
1440 SAT, 800,700,? SAT IIs
101.36 GPA (w), 1/83
debate, student council, dance, nhs, yearbook...all i can remember
schools accepted/applied: 11/11
duke (likely in jan.), georgetown (john carroll scholar), harvard, howard (full ride), notre dame (ND scholar), wash u (exploration program), stanford (FVP program), yale (likely in jan.), texas, virginia (echols and semi-finalist for jeff. scholarship), pitt (full ride),

Ask me anything you'd like. I promise to be honest. ;)

I've asked this question before, but how much does legacy help with admissions?

wow, you got into a lot of schools with your stats. I wish I am able to do that this round. So, what do you think got you in? Essays? SATs? or just strong ecs?

I feel the same way. I'd be happy to help answer any questions too. I guess I'll continue the trend of listing my stats and college acceptances:

-1540/800/770/750, 4/450, all 5s on 8 APs
-Over 400 hours of community service working with homeless in addition to serving in multiple leadership positions, participating in national musical ensembles, playing soccer, lax, and receiving multiple awards, etc.
-schools accepted/applied: 10/12
accepted: duke (i'm here!, didn't receive a likely though), columbia, upenn, dartmouth, princeton, cornell (likely), UVA (echols), rice, wash u (likely letter), emory
wait-listed: yale
rejected: brown (lol, and I got their book award...)

ask me anything as well...

Legacy does help, especially if it is accompanied with donations, but not to the extent everyone makes it out to be (unless it's accompanied by REALLY LARGE donations, lol). The legacies I know at Duke are all very well-qualified except for the ones with last names on buildings, etc. I basically think that legacy just makes the process a little less random than it normally is, depending on the school.

how the **** were you two accepted everywhere? for the first of you, the valedictorian at my school has better numbers than u and he was just deferrred princeton ED wtf

lol, college admissions is RANDOM...you gotta really understand that

i guess that's a good thing. random admissions would help me A LOT

i had a pretty strong essay, wonderful recs, lots of ecs (track team state title, founded speech club, went to state, lots of service, etc.) as you can see by my class rank, but class/school was REALLY tiny. i had the opportunity to get to know all my teachers on a really personal basis.

i don't deny that my URM stats was noticed, but i'm more than confident that i was evaluated, not simply the color of my skin. just a tad worried that some of places i turned down for undergrad will turn me down for law school. ;) is it sad that i'm already stressed about that?

legacy plays a factor, but all the legacies i know have stats well within the ranges for duke. legacies aren't a large group on campus, it seems. i don't know too many.

um...this doesn't really hafta do with admissions or anything, but if you were at the Toledo game, what was the atmosphere like when Coack K got win # 700?

i dont know... personally i hate the affirmative action policy because it is itself inherently racist. even if a person is super rich and comes from an affluent community... that person will still receive a big advantage if he/she is an URM.

I don't believe that the system is inherently racist, but definitely flawed. Its not fair that every URM recieves help when not all URMs need it. "Mend it, don't end it" as our former president said.

Toledo game: The atmosphere at the Toledo game was probably insane! I wasn't there because I got home Saturday night, but I know many people weren't still at school. Mostly freshmen had finals Saturday morning and by then, both West, Central and East were ghost towns. I know a few people that stayed to watch the game, but that was kind of difficult since the dorms closed at noon on Sunday.

So, any more questions about Duke?

eh opinion on the girls trying to see how others feel....actually u appear to be a giirl so if not a problem ask anoter guy haha lolty

I'm sure you have met many people at Duke and know much of what they accomplished during high school. comparing my stats to theirs, how do you think I will fare? Am I run of the mill or below average? You won't hurt my feelings:)

Ecner - First off, I don't know your stats. ;) The larger problem is that people at Duke don't really share that information. I don't know any of my friends SAT scores, GPAs, class rank - nada. It's something that simply isn't discussed.

I'm sure, however, that some of the pros on this website can give you good feedback.

sure, I understand.
