Hi all,
I remember how hard and confusing being a perspective freshmen was, so Ill try my best to answer any questions.
A little on me:
-accepted to every UC, including Berkeley-still chose UCSD
- currently a first year but will have junior units by the end of this year
-Marshall Student
-full time student who also works
-Poli Sci major
Ask away

What’s the best thing about being a UCSD student? A Marshall student?
What’s the worst thing about being a UCSD/Marshall student?
What made you choose UCSD over UCLA and UCB?
Thanks!

fwiw, I’m most likely going to UCSD next year as a Chem E major under Marshall.

Which type of housing did you choose when you first came in?
Which one do you recommend? I plan to stay on campus but I got confused a bit because they seem to have double, triple, single, and apartment??
I am in Marshall so I heard somewhere from CC that Marshall has a lot of doubles???

How hard/easy is Political Science? What’s your GPA in Poli Sci right now?

A 1x6: *the best thing about ucsd, and don’t judge me for being superficial is the weather :P. You really underestimate the effect weather can have on you. Since the weather is generally good we are more willing to go out and explore the city. On days where the weather isn’t so great it is pretty hard to force yourself to go to class especially because classes can be so spread out.
- For marshall I really like the layout of the dorms- I think they are great for social interaction and also are in a great location( in close-ish proximity) for a lot of things. I also think that the GEs for marshall aren’t as bad as for some other colleges. But really with the exception of GEs and location the college you are in makes no difference…That said, the first quarter of DOC (especially with certain teachers) is really awful and you essentially go 10 weeks hearing about how white people are the source of hell on earth and should feel guilty for it Also the first quarter has journal assignments instead of big papers, which while easier for science/math majors, I found to be idiotic and a waste of time.
- I was never too interested in UCLA, and I had a job lined up in SD which made UCSD a better option than UCB. There were a lot of smaller reasons as well but I won’t bore you with those.
At Chaini: - Don’t choose apartments. While the apartments are nice and come with a kitchen they are usually for 2nd/3rd years. The large majority of Freshmen live in the res halls, so if you want to interact with people having the same experience as you choose the res halls. The apartments have less people and are less socially incline for new comers…not to mention the people living in them will probably have already made a close group of friends. Currently Marshall doesn’t have triples…the doubles are spacious but if there were to be triples the doubles would become triples and it’s hard for me to picture that. Either all the doubles will continue to be doubles or they will all be reverted back to triples so it wouldn’t matter which one you wrote down…( be safe and put down the one you want). I have a single- which is pretty cozy but has enough space for everything and also has more drawers than a double :D. Because of the suite system it really doesn’t matter socially whether or not you have a roommate. Having a single is probably the greatest thing i could have ever asked for, sometimes you just want an hour to yourself, or not to be woken up , or to be able to make noise and stay up late. If you can afford it-try and get a single.
@BoGo:
*Poli sci at UCSD is ranked in the top 10 in the nation, so it isn’t easy. That said, if you can read quickly and are a very good writer it shouldn’t be too difficult. The three required lower divs are pretty interesting and all the professors i’ve had for them have been great Poli 30( stats), which you have to take, really depends on the professor…take it with galdersi and it won’t be too bad, but take it with despatato( like i did) and you’ll want to commit suicide it will be that difficult. Some upper divs are taught by profs would supposedly just hand out As…but you need to be like a super senior(credits wise) to get into those But really, upper divs are a whole different ball game and require a lot of work…most freshmen don’t take upper divs in poli sci. I took one last quarter and there was on average 500 pages of reading a week…which wouldn’t have been too bad if I didn’t also have 3 other classes
anyways I currently( after a mediocre 1st quarter and a great 2nd quarter) have a 3.6 so i’m slowly working my way up :)

this may be a silly question but how is the food at marshall? (OVT, goodys, etc)?
what are some specific types of food you saw?

What are good ways to stay in shape on campus? And is the Geisel Library a nice place to study or do you recommend studying in your room?

How many classes do you recommend taking at one time?

Which AP classes did you take/pass for you to be at a junior status? (Sorry, bad wording, but I hope you know what I mean)

Where are some good places to visit/hang out outside of UCSD (besides the beach)?

If you could describe TMC in three words, what would they be?

What advice do you have that you wish you knew as a freshman?

Thanks for doing this! It’s unbelievably helpful!
