As the college admission process is starting to wind down and the dust is beginning to settle. I'm sure many of you have begun to come to conclusion about where you're going.

I'm leaning towards UCSD as of now. Admitted as a Computer Engineering and Science Major. Anyone want to give me some feed back regarding the atmosphere of UCSD as well as how Marshall is in general?

Almost it would be cool if I could meet my fellow Marshall acquaintances!

I’m going to be a biochem major at Marshall! Nice to meet you! I’m still making my decisions (Cal Vs Davis Vs SD). So far, I think SD will be the school I’m going to!

Hi guys I’m a biochem/chem major in marshall.
Still deciding between SD / Cal, and its a tough decision, mainly because of the lack of school spirit, and cal’s prestige.
it’s been a few days, i don’t know if you went to triton day but it’s beautiful. outside the dorms look kind of ehhh and inside its kind of crowded (hallways), but the rooms are pretty spacey. we’re really close to the beach, and we have a boss lounge under the boss dining hall. we also have a hill where events are held a lot. lots of grass, close to the tennis courts/other recreational building.

Does anyone know if the suites are co-ed? I mean not the individual rooms that you share with roomates, I know those are single sex. Like, if I opened my door and went across the hall, would that be a guys dorm?

The suites are single sex – if you just opened your room door, you would walk into a common room shared by 7-9 other people of the same gender. If you left the common area/bathroom, walked into the main hallway, and knocked on the door across from you, those people could be either the same or the opposite sex. I believe the majority of them will be the opposite gender, but when I lived in the res halls the top floor of my building was all girls in both suites.

My impression of Marshall is that people are friendly and the community is close knit. I would say people might be a little too laid back sometimes and are less proactive at meeting new people. At the same time, even the people I’ve briefly met during orientation and welcome week of my freshman year still remember me and we always chat when we run into each other. And that’s my general experience :)

Everyone goes to UCSD thinking it’s socially dead then finds that college is what you make of it. We’re D2 in sports, but I still have fun going to games with friends. Smaller house parties are the norm. I do have to say that if you’re seeking an urban environment UCSD might not be for you. The immediate community is very suburban and I personally wish we had a bustling urban college town like Cal :P

Still having a really hard time ):
In terms of social, I want that mix between urban and sub. LOL.

I keep hearing its pretty hard to make friends in SD, and I’m a bit worried. I do want to party, because I’ve lived in a seriously sheltered area all my life, but I feel like Cal might be TOO much of a jump for me. My definition of party, as of these four years, is 10 people cuddling under blankets in front a a tv for movie night and making bacon sandwiches and macaroons…

^
i wouldn’t say the dorms are that old…
well, i guess the 1960s is old (i think that’s around when they were built?).

but they aren’t that bad.

and i don’t think they’ll be cramped anymore. someone here on CC posted that there won’t be any triples anymore (they’ll be doubles now)–those were the only things making dorms cramped imo.

I am 2nd year Marshall - Bioengineering/Biotechnology.

First year dorms are suits (now two doubles, four singles, bathroom), but last year we didn’t have doubles only triples (two triples, four singles, bathroom)

Second year apartments are Upper (two doubles, one single, kitchen, bathroom) or Lower (one double, two singles, kitchen, bathroom)

Marshall is much better than Six college, where I lived last summer.

Marshall GE is the easiest for me.
DOC is easy, UD GE could be your minor (EDS 130, 128)

^ There were doubles in N building last year, and I heard they’re in the process of converting most of the triples to doubles for the following years.

The dorms don’t really look old. I hated the powder blue railings at first but now it’s kind of a signature for Marshall and I miss it The singles aren’t huge, but they are actually bigger than my room at home hahaha. It’s enough space to live in and stay cozy. A lot of people fall in love with their singles and don’t want to leave.

In the packet they sent you when you got in, they say

So yes. But you shouldn’t wait until the last minute to sign up for housing.

In fact, you don’t even have to send the SIR in before signing up for housing. When you “sign up” for housing right now, all you’re really doing is reserving a spot on a list, which is why I signed up for housing the day after I got in though I still haven’t sent my SIR in yet. You choose dorm options + other stuff later after May 1 I think. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Regarding housing, you could “sign up at no obligation” shortly after you were accepted and it gives you some priority, I read when we were at Triton Day. New for the Class of 2016 is guaranteed four years of housing on campus.

If any of you Marshall students are curious how the dorms will look like, search up TMC Cribs on youtube. There one for guys and another for girls. It has a walking tour of the dorms inside. In my opinion, I do find the space modest enough. I was honestly expecting worse.

My son and I attended Triton Day and saw the dorms at Marshall. They look like about every dorm on the planet. Our tour guide, who is a 4th year, said that they are refurbishing them this summer…new carpets, etc…so they’ll look like upscale Motel 6. Seriously, my son loved the sense of community and so the room took a back seat to everything else UCSD.
