Thank you so much for your reply!!!

I have just two more questions:

After I submitted my application, I clicked “click here to print your summary.” Should I be worried that I was not able to view my essays for my first and second residential program choices?

Re: Freshmen seminars: Can any of them be counted towards the general requirements?

Hi, I was just wondering if there is any way to borrow new books (ie, not classics/famous, just what you would find in a Barnes and Noble) from the library at Penn? Sorry if my question is stupid

I think that’s a really good question and while I’m probably not the best person to answer it (I’ll be a freshman in 2013 too), I went on the Penn Library website and checked for a major b&n bestseller-The Yankee Years- and they had it and students can borrow it.

*2. Re: Freshmen seminars: Can any of them be counted towards the general requirements? *
Yep they can count towards sector requirements. You may need to get your adviser to do an override in order for them to count on your worksheet (Once you get your PennKey and are able to log on to Penn InTouch, you can create a “worksheet” which details all of your sector, foundational, and major requirements and keeps track of which requirements have been satisfied. I had problems getting my seminar classes to count, so my adviser just had to log on and “give me permission” to count the courses)

^ CDN-dancer – are you dancing at Penn? What are the dance opportunities like? Do you know anything about the ballroom team? How about dance classes at Bryn Mawr? thanks!

I have a question regarding scholarships. If I received outside scholarships, are they deducted my family’s expected contribution, my expected contribution and work study combined?

At this point, my outside scholarship awards exceeds my expected contribution and work study combined, and I was hoping that it would lessen my family’s EC as well especially since it is significantly larger than the other two. But on the site it said scholarships are deducted from “self help” only…? Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks!

RedPhoenix: I had the same problem. I have annual $2500 National Merit Scholarship, so I called the financial aid office to see how that would work.

The money CANNOT be contributed toward your parents’ contribution. It goes first to your contribution and second to your work study.

Hope that helps.

that’s kind of ridiculous in my opinion, especially in my low income family situation where my scholarship exceeds my own self help portion already and i’m still waiting on a lot more results.

thanks for the response though

Right now I’m working to start up a new dance group; I don’t know too much about the other dance groups on campus other then the fact that there are groups for just about every type of dance you could possibly imagine. I know the Latin/ballroom team recently went up to MIT for a competition and from what I’ve heard they did pretty well. I think the Latin/Ballroom group practices twice a week, and they have both social dancing and competitive dancing.

For more information about performing arts in general, and dancing more specifically, take a look at these sites.
[Performing Arts Council](http://www.dolphin.upenn.edu/pac/)
[Dance Arts Council](http://www.dolphin.upenn.edu/pac/dac.html)

Not all dance groups are part of the Dance Arts Council, although the “big/main” ones are. Freaks of the Beat, the break dance group, for instance, isn’t a member of the council.

About taking classes in the Quaker Consortium, I just came across this site which lets you search for courses at the three colleges (Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Swarthmore)

^
Thanks. I am aware of these groups and the Quaker Consortium. Just wondering if anyone had any firsthand experiences with them?
What kind of a dance group will you be starting?

What do most people forget or want to have when they get to college, especially at Penn? I have all the normal suggested stuff, like lamps, a rug, etc, etc

Any idea what the summer reading will be this year?

it’s a painting

What ATMs are on campus?

How nice are the gyms/ gym?

Do you know anyone doing BFS or Vag?

@arichjoe: PNC is the major bank on campus. There are PNC ATMs in the Wawa’s as well as in the branch on 40th and Walnut. There’s also a PNC ATM on the first floor of Harnwell (one of the three high rises). I’m not sure but there might be some in the other high rises too. There’s also a Wachovia ATM at 40th and Chestnut and one in the Wachovia branch, somewhere around 34th and Chestnut. And there’s a Citibank next to the Pottruck Gym on Walnut, which leads me to your next question.

The Penn gym, Pottruck, is really awesome. The facilities are very new and clean and they have pretty much everything you’d need for a workout. It’s so good I haven’t even done any research on other nearby gyms.

I have some friends in BFS and also some Vagelos friends. They’re definitely popular programs, although a bit selective (however, Vagelos is way more selective than BFS).

I’m just wondering if, in your experience, classes pretty much go by the syllabus or if professors tend to give pop quizzes.

Thank you.

if there are pop quizzes, they’re in the syllabus, haha

ok just got Pennkey and have some questions:
- How do you get your Penn email? does signing up for Pennkey basically signs u up for email account?
- When is application for penn ID due?
- When is picking classes? do you get an adviser that helps u choose? if so when?
- Are there going to be mails about going step by step through dinning setup, etc.? or are u just supposed to figure it out urself?

*Thanks. I am aware of these groups and the Quaker Consortium. Just wondering if anyone had any firsthand experiences with them?

A girl on my floor was in Pan-Asian; she seemed to enjoy it, although it was a huge time commitment. From what I heard, they would practice virtually all day on Saturday, although since they would run through a lot of dances, not everyone would be dancing the entire day (if that makes sense…) I’m trying to start up an Irish dance group. Whether the group will be more performance oriented or more geared to teaching beginners remains to be seen (depends on the composition of the group)…I’m hoping for a balance of the two. (If anyone is interested, send me a PM and I can give you more information)

I’d recommend a duffel bag and maybe a sleeping bag, especially if you’re planning on joining a sports team that travels for tournaments.
