I am a junior accounting/finance/econ triple major at FSU. I am involved in several organizatioins on campus, and have a few leadership roles. if anyone has any question on just about any aspect of FSU... let me know and ill see if i can help you out.

I have a son starting in the summer. Thanks for offering to answer questions...

Triple major?!wow? what is your study schedule like? do you have a routine for studying?

Overall how do you rate the professors?

What is your favorite thing about being a student at FSU?

Do you live in or off campus? How long do most students live on campus?

How do you spend your weekends?

How do you feel about the Greek scene?

Is there anything special students starting in the summer c should know?

Did you do the FYE class? Or what have you heard about it from students. The faculty recommend it highly but wondered if students thought it was worth it.

I have a daughter starting summer. She registered for 8:00 a.m. classes which concerns me. What are your experiences with early classes. She wants to be in the Marching Chiefs.

I'm curious about the FYE class as well.

i'm an incoming freshman, but from what i heard at orientation, most of the students recommended the FYE class.

Reasons:
--it's not a big strain on your course load (and it's over in October, so you have more time to study for academic classes)
--it's only offered in the fall semester of your freshman year, so you never get the opportunity again to take it.
--great way to meet students "outside" of class
--there are some specific sections, like the one for exploratory majors, which can help you make friends inside your interest areas.

that's the overall feeling i got :]

Gato, 8am classes are actually pretty okay. I early admitted last year at my community college instead of doing my senior year and I had 8am classes every morning. It gave me incentive to go to bed at earlier at night because I knew I had to wake up early the next day. Instead of "wasting" the day away sleeping, she's getting out and starting her day off early and maybe even getting to bed earlier at night.

Marching Chiefs is amazing. I was going to join the color guard but I had to choose between winterguard and Chiefs, and my heart was with the winterguard. I saw them perform and practice last year and it is such an amazing thing. She'll love it.

I hate morning classes. Half the people there(sometimes even the teacher) are half asleep. It can be quite annoying in other ways too. 1)You have to be considerate if you have a roommate. I loved mornings when my roommate wasn't there. I could wake up, turn on the lights, put on a song and get ready.
2)Remember dining halls don't open until 7:30. If the first class is a descent walk away, you have to scarf down your breakfast and start hauling.

Do you know what areas are open to eat in the summer? D has registered for 9:30 classes M-F. Then A lab at 11:00 everday. Also MW a class at 2:00. She won't have a kitchen.

I am also interested in the rating of professors. I saw this in a thread somewhere but lost it.

SUSSAI

Thanks! I just looked at the site. I guess with multiple teachers teaching the same subject, it is hard to know at this point who she'll get. But they all looked good for the summer classes she registered for so far.

I'm going to be a senior and I'm applying to FSU, and it's my number one choice...I'm kind of interested in the actuary program... does FSU have one?

Actuarial Science:
Actuarial Science

or perhaps Insurance Risk Management: College of Business | Risk Management/Insurance, Real Estate & Business Law

We have a student on here who is in the actuarial science program at FSU.

awm06 I think it was...

This isn't my thread, but it's a slow day in the office and I've been reading these boards to pass some time (returning to school soon as a graduate student) - perhaps you'd appreciate the input of an FSU alum?
Quite frankly, my answer isn't going to be of much use to you - everybody develops their own study habits. Some succeed with them, and others (approximately 35% of every incoming class) ultimately fail.

I doubled majored in Classics and English - and I really didn't study much.

Overall how do you rate the professors?
Variable. I had everything from disinterested, incompetent TAs to tenured faculty who were not only leaders in their field but also interested in their students. Most fell somewhere in between. I did hear recently that one of my favorite professors has taken a job elsewhere, and I'm sure some others have already gone or are soon to follow. It's a sad reflection upon the state of higher education in Florida (what with the budget cuts and all) but it is what it is.

I will say this: generally speaking, the quality of your instructors will increase as you progress farther into your major, as the gen eds and entry-level major courses are either assigned to inexperienced junior faculty or TAs.

This all said, FSU is apparently one of the few large research institutions out there that actually takes undergraduate education seriously, and the school DOES make adjustments based on the results of semester-end SUSSAI surveys - so those shouldn't be neglected! The results are available online, so I highly recommend that any student considering a particular course or instructor review them first: SUSSAI

What is your favorite thing about being a student at FSU?

I honestly couldn't say. Towards the end of my time there I began to like the campus and the area much more than I had initially - so that's something, I suppose.

Do you live in or off campus? How long do most students live on campus?
I lived on campus for six weeks during my first summer there and moved into an apartment at the beginning of the fall semester. Most students live on campus for their freshman year only; it's very rare to stay beyond that, though those who do almost always migrate to one of the on-campus apartment buildings or become RAs.

Regarding off-campus housing: AVOID THE STUDENT-ORIENTED APARTMENT COMPLEXES.

How do you spend your weekends?
There's a lot to do around Tallahassee if you like the outdoors. I used to have BBQs at Tom Brown park with my friends...or we'd go mountain (well, small hill) biking, play indoor racquetball, visit the Apalachicola National Forest, drive down to St. George Island, and so forth.

How do you feel about the Greek scene?
I had a few friends who were involved, but I never followed through with it. Just wasn't interested - most frats/sororities are purely social in nature, and I didn't need the distractions. Though there's a fairly large on-campus Greek presence (which declined significantly when Heritage Grove opened), I'd say that fewer than 20% of the student body is actually involved in it.

Is there anything special students starting in the summer c should know?
Sure - stick to two classes and avoid the 8 am starts. I'd imagine most incoming freshmen aren't exactly accustomed to working or taking classes during the summer just yet - but that will come. :)

akhb -thanks for these thoughtful comments. it makes me feel good that a fsu alum is taking the time to share and help newbie parents like me get a look at the bigger picture. much appreciated!

I'll be a soph at fsu in the fall , so here are my answers:

what is your study schedule like? do you have a routine for studying?
~ study schedule really depends on your major. most of my friends who are biological science/chem majors study very much and its serious. overall you're going to have to study. a lot of freshman come into college thinking it's all fun and games and no studying which you'll soon find out is a lie. haha

Overall how do you rate the professors?
~ Overall my experience has been good. fsu has some quality faculty. whoever said you get better teachers as you get up into your major classes was right, but all in all i havent had any major complaints as far as profs go, also ratemyprofessor.com works very well when youre signing up for classes too.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at FSU?
~ I love the size of the school. the fact that there are so many students is a positive aspect to me. there is always something to do here, and something to be involved in. i was born and raised in tallahassee and am and fsu legacy. i can say first hand that fsu used to be much more of a party school in the past and has cleaned up its act a lot but it's still a lot of fun.

Do you live in or off campus? How long do most students live on campus?
~ My freshman year i lived in a dorm. i had a love/hate relationship. it's fun if you're a social and outgoing person but VERY OFTEN can get extremely annoying because everyone is obnoxious and doesnt let you sleep. i really didnt make that many friends in my actual dorm/floor although i am an extremely outgoing person. i made my friends elsewhere. i think most people live in dorms their 1st year then get an apt or house. i wouldnt live in the dorms again and im getting an apt for the fall. it's just more privacy and flexibility.

How do you spend your weekends?
~ A combination of going out with friends and studying, catching up on laundry, etc. it honestly depends on my courseload and how much i need to get done that weekend.

How do you feel about the Greek scene?
~ a lot of people are involved. A majority of my friends are. I wouldn't do it because i feel like a lot of it is unnecessary and time consuming but some people love it. Just depends on who you are.

Is there anything special students starting in the summer c should know?
~ I started in the fall but I would say just have fun and explore everything about the campus so you'll know it well by fall, bc all the students come in and things get a little hectic & crazy. According to most of my friends who did Summer ses, Summer is a lot more relaxed at fsu because u only take a few classes and it's all about meeting new folks.

Hope that helps!! Let me know if anyone has any more questions about Honors Program, honor societies, dorm life, TALLAHASSEE!! go noles.

thank you for sharing!!!! my son has been at summer c for one week. In his own words everything is just great. And I can say so far fsu has exceeded my high expectations!!! go noles.
