I’m a freshman at FSU and I have nothing to do right now, so if you have any questions I’ll try to answer them. I’ll be most able to answer basic stuff about admissions, life on campus, dorms, stuff to do, classes, etc., but I’ll still try to direct you if you ask something I don’t know about.
BTW, I know you’ll probably be advised by people in your life to take a light load your first semester, but you should really take the standard 15-ish. That way you can drop a class if you need to but still be full time. Also, you don’t want to have too much free time on your hands like I do right now (13 credit hours).
so I have my heart set on UF, but FSU is my backup. would you say it’s a good social life for someone who’s not really into partying? also, are the people genuine, decent people? what about clubs/extracurricular things? I’m really looking for a good college experience, and wondering if FSU would be right for me. thanks so much!
What is FSU like for science/engineering majors who are not all that into a social scene?
Most of the “social” kids from my older son’s class ended up at FSU, and that makes me nervous for my younger tech-y not-into-partying kid.
Also, are there suite style dorms?
Hope you’re having a great first year!
@2collegehopes I won’t lie to you, there is a big party and Greek scene here. It can feel overwhelming at first if you don’t have a group of friends going in. That being said, there are 700 student organizations and you can find your niche if you just put yourself out there. I joined Habitat for Humanity and Pride Student Union and met some very cool and down to earth people there. Another option is to look into any living learning communities you might be interested in. LLC’s are a group of kids with a special interest (music, social justice, women in stem, etc.) who all live in the same dorm/floor and take a few classes together. My friend is in the social justice LLC and has made some wonderful friends through it.
I completely understand the concern about the social aspect because I’m not into partying either. But there really is something for everyone. Instead of partying, you can go see a movie or play video games at the ASLC. You can do a group fitness class at the free gyms on campus. In Tallahassee there are cultural/food festivals, pre-football game activities like Downtown Getdown, where there’s a lot of food and live entertainment. There’s food truck Thursdays and first Friday too. You can go to the Rez and kayak, canoe, paddleboard, etc. If you’re outdoorsy, you can do stuff with Outdoor Pursuits. So don’t stress out too much.
@southfloridamom9 See above about the social scene. For your son in particular though, I would suggest looking into something like TechNole or ACM for organizations. There are some very techy and cool people there.
The vast majority of dorms are suite style. There’s only one or two that aren’t suite.
