Current Students: German FSA?

Does anyone know how diffcult it is to do the Berlin FSA my sophomore fall? I know there was some previous discussion on this board that some of the study abroad programs are extremely difficult to get into, sometimes nearly impossible if you aren't a major. I am planning to only minor in German, do you think I would be able to get into the program sophomore fall, or would I get bumped to junior fall, or would I not get in at all because I'm not a German major? Any thoughts are appreciated.

I'm also interested in the German study abroad, as well as the Caribbean/Central American bio. sciences study abroad. If anyone has more info on either it would be greatly appreciated.

Not a student just a parent listening to the would haves, could haves should haves now that her friends are going to Spain next year (she should have applied to go with then next spring).

Applications will be due shortly after you return from your fall break at the beginning of 2006 (hopefully Ben and Kelsey can add something)

Know what the prerequisites are and and that you have room to get them into your schedule.

for German- Any two courses above German 5 (excluding 7, 42-43, which are in translation, require additional work in German) with an average grade of B or better.

Chris- Prerequisites for Bio Study abroad

Biology 14: Ecology and Evolution (to be taken before applying for admission to the program);

at least one advanced-level course in ecology, with lab, (e.g., Biology 53: Aquatic Ecology; Biology 59: Physiological Ecology; or Biology 33: Animal Behavior.)

Additional coursework in ecology and evolution and relevant experiences will strengthen applications. Selection is based on a written application and an interview with the program faculty.

Know going in that you will need to take bio 14 this fall (as it only given in the fall term ) If you are looking to go sophmore year, then you will have to register for Bio 33 in the spring because it is the only one of the pre-reqs listed that is being offered before you leave.

Hope this helps

Thanks Sybbie! Are your daughter's friends 08s? Are they doing an LSA in Spain or an FSA? Are they planning to major in Spanish? (Kind of specific questions, but thought I might just throw them out there).

Yes, they are 08s.
One will be doing an LSA in Mexico in the winter (her major is romance languages, math minor).

4 are doing the LSA in Spain next spring (various majors. 2 I know are doing the Pre-med track so they wanted to be on campus fall & winter in order to take Orgo)

Hmmm, I am trying to decide if I want to go for the FSA or LSA. I have taken 3rd and 4th semester German at State U, and then figure if I took German classes fall, winter, and spring of freshman year, I could do the FSA sophomore fall, or do people usually have more preparation than that? During the German LSA, students take German 3, Intermediate German, which, I think, is what I have essentially completed this year (albeit at State U, which probably isn't quite up to par). I would meet the minimum requirements for FSA after freshman year, but not with too much room to spare. (However, since the application date is earlier than I thought: I suppose you need to have completed those classes when you apply, not by when you plan to go???) Unfortunately, FSA is only offered in the Fall, so if I don't go sophomore fall, I have to spread out my German classes and wait to go junior fall (which would also mean having classes 5 terms straight...could get long).
I guess I was kind of rambling there. Do you think if I called up the First Year Office, they could put me in touch with someone in the German Dept, or would they tell me to just wait until fall?
Thanks!

No, you don't need to have the courses completed when you apply. You must have the courses completed before you go.

Oh, that's great that I don't have to complete the courses before I apply. Thanks for all the great info Sybbie!

The German one will probably be easy to get into. Not so for Biology.
