what are your impressions of ucla? people? friend-making? academics? lower-divison courses? quality of students? friendliness? what would you say are the faults of the university? what do you dislike and like/love about your experience? mmm are you satisfied?

just curious of what my peers think... it's not always been expliocitly addressed on the forum... sure we have lists but what have your experiences actually been like? plz give some context etc about major, year, social tendencies, willingness to yes engage in stuff etc and bite the bullet etc at times... just curious.

ucla academics are boring, unexciting, but easy enough. not sure about upper division courses, but should be easy enough too. quality of students? low. girls? met a few nice ones. people friendly enough in general. satisfied? not yet.

As a freshman, I'm a bit disappointed with my classes. Lectures=crazily boring. In HS, I choose WHEN I fall asleep in class. Here? It's nearly Impossible to stay awake in some of my lectures... unless I get some coffee. And how in the world are you supposed to get recs for grad school? You literally have to attend every single OH to get to "know" the prof. -__-

Lots of resources, but you must find them yourself. None of that holding-your-hand mentality like in private schools.

People? Not as diverse as I was hoping for, but people are quite friendly

I'm disappointed with the economics department. I have only found one teacher that was any good and the rest are horrible. The accounting department is a lot better , which is good since that's my career focus.

I actually like the get to know the prof through OH. It kind of rewards those who actually take the initiative to go out and know a professor. The only problem is that a lot of the time, OH are filled with people and I have to wait 30-40 minutes to talk to a prof.

The people here are nice people.

I love how the campus looks, the atmosphere, and the environment. I dislike how I messed up my first year here and I have to spend my senior year making up for it by studying a crazy amount. My fault.

I'm pretty pumped. Academics have been very interesting and all my teachers have been engaging and really cared about the students. Socially I've been having the time of my life and have met some really cool guys & girls. Makes me wish I'd been here for fresh/soph year...

i HEART ucla as the t-shirt goes but i definitely do have a lot of gripes.

the students are pretty uninteresting and conformist. classes are a ***** to get into. ASUCLA food sucks (but dorms are good), umm... too much emphasis on law/med school, not enough thinking outside the box, blah blah blah

but for a public school that's the size it is, it's pretty darn good. i couldnt ask for too much better.

Beautiful campus. Hard to get to know people unless you really try. My best friends here are either floormates or roommates. And then, it was just luck that I came across them or that I go to know them so well. Sure I've been to club meetings or organization stuff or do stuff but it's more like collecting acquaintances or such. I have casted a good net but mmm needs more development.

People are a mixed bag. I've met some v. passionate people, highly motivated + bizecon-y type / premed go-getters... most of the time though, i've known quite a few of apathetic persons which kinda dulls thigns a bit. school is v. diverse but not in terms of ethnicwise obv. could ask for more oh say passion and more engaging discussion sections. my exp's have been dull in that respect.

Academics? Great. It's a ***** to plow through lowerdiv courses since well, im rly not that intersted in the wide range but on some specific focuses. dont really like chasing TAs for clarification or extra help or review sessions with 300 of your best friends. can be a complete ***** and agonizing to mindlessly watch the prof lecture and sit and not say anything perhaps... =/= seminar courses and minedly absorb for say 15 hours a week.... itll get better upperdiv. some courses havent been as challenging as thought would be. wish philosophy dept was more seminar based. wish history program was more integrated. wish english wasnt so dependent on the norton book. wish had more profs or wish were around people who cared enough.

otehrwise, good exp iverall. cant ask for more from public research university. continuing to plow through otherwise... and "not be hand held" or w/.e the excuse is.

ABSOLUTELY love the performances on campus + network of events going around. its so awesome... kinda a pain if u dont know someone with a car. afterwards, such a rewarding exp to be in LA and have access say, to museums, operas, sporting events, cultural stuff, and even then if u stay in westwood, theres macgowan/freudplayhouse, geffen playhouse, and countless events at schoenberg and asmazing sports programs to pay attn to. that and well theres always something going on... whether its neuroscience lectures or stuff at melnitz + film premieres in westwood... its really awesome.

What are they at your fraternity? People are trying to reason it by saying that the prime real estate is simply worth that much around here. But in all honesty I wouldn't mind living a few blocks away and paying a hundo less..

Man, you guys should go to grad school at another school. Then you'll see just how lucky you are to be at UCLA.

Lower-divs suck, I agree. But getting to know your profs isn't so bad as long as you are willing to take seminars or go to offices. I could still probably walk into a couple offices and get recognized on a first name basis. Not that it's not hard, but it's definitely not impossible.

I saw UCLA as a well of opportunity that most people didn't tap. Everyone worried so much about their careers that they forgot to try things out-- EAP, UCDC, internships, clubs. Jobs will come, guys. Go do STUFF.

By the way, Altema... econ just sucks everywhere. My friends at Penn, Cal, Columbia, and UCSD all complained about it. It just sucks. Dismal science, indeed.

I figured that it was a bleak major everywhere. But I feel that the teachers here COULD be better, lol. You can tell if the teachers are horrid even if the major itself sucks.
