I finished my first year at William & Mary and submitted a transfer application to Georgetown's SFS. GU always has been my dream school (I was rejected when I applied in high school), but now that I'm waitlisted, I need to seriously entertain the idea that I will have to go back to W&M. The problem is that although W&M is a great school, and although I did well there, I really do not like it. In fact, I'm worried that if I go back, I'm not going to be able to maintain a good gpa due to my extreme distaste for the place. During the beginning of the year, I told myself that if I didn't get into Georgetown, I would be going back to a great school, as I only applied to Georgetown as a transfer student. Unfortunately, I now realize that I was caught up in the whole "W&M is a great school, I'm supposed to like it because many people would be happy to be me." Yeah, total BS.

So now, assuming that I do not get into Georgetown, would anyone recommend for me to go to community college for my sophomore year and then try to transfer to Georgetown for junior year? The problem with this is that my undergraduate GPA would then be split among THREE schools, which I feel is too much. Also, I'm not 100% sure whether I will go back to W&M or not, I'm still thinking everything over. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Would you be able to take some sort of gap year to strengthen your application? I’m not sure how much this would help for a transfer student though.

So when will you have a decision? It sucks you were waitlisted, out of everybody in the Gtown thread, it was obvious you really want to go.

I don’t think having your GPA split is really a big deal, I would just be worried about what you would do if you do CC and then don’t get into GU again. It’s tough to think about but you need to have options. Hope to see you in the fall man (or girl, not sure actually)

Well, as someone transferring OUT of SFS I wish I could give you my spot, haha. If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer them.

@surfwakesnow165, I think a gap year would hurt me at this point. What do you think?

@Buegie, I’m a dude, btw; lol. I hope I see you next year too, man. Hopefully everything will work out. I’m just worried about going back to a place that I won’t like. I wish at this I applied to back-up schools. I’ll probably find out in a month or so. But it would be later if they put me on an extended waitlist…around early August or so…

@ananapp, where are you transferring to? What year are you? And why are you leaving? If you don’t mind me asking.

I just finished my freshman year, and I haven’t officially sent in the papers but I’m almost positive I’m transferring to Columbia. It’s a great school and I saw my academic future ahead of me there, but I just wasn’t satisfied with the narrow curriculum and the social environment. It was legitimately a situation in which I wouldn’t have been inconsolable at the thought of returning, but I felt that I wanted something more so I went for it.

It’s great that you’re happy with your decision. Good luck at Columbia next fall! I know that your opinion of Georgetown is obviously subjective and won’t necessairly be the same as mine, assuming I become a student at Georgetown. Nevertheless, I was wondering if you could elaborate on what you mean regarding your unsatisfaction with the “social enviornment”?

So far in my academic career, I have attended three academic institutions, and will be planing on going onto a fourth or a fifth. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend you either go to W&M and re-apply to schools for transfer next year, or take a gap year and strengthen your application.

I understand that you find W&M distasteful, and I completely understand how you feel (I feel the same way about UT, even though I know many people would be happy to be in my spot). However, if you can tell yourself that you’ll be an even stronger applicant for Georgetown and other schools next year (the fact that you’ve been wait listed one year and you’ll be re-applying the year after), then I hope you continue at W&M.

Next year, try applying to some other schools as well, such as Tufts or some Ivy leagues, for example. I know Georgetown is your dream school, and God willing you’ll get there.

I followed you through the GU thread, and I can tell that you’re willing to go the extra mile for GU. I strongly believe that staying at W&M for an extra year or taking a gap year is part of it.

Good luck, kid.

I literally wrote an essay to respond to your question, and when I hit reply CC told me to log in after it cleared my post. God. Damn. You. College. Confidential.

I have to come back some other time to write down what I meant to say. I’m so frustrated right now, I can’t even think about trying. >:O >:(

i completely understand your point, OP. i am currently at an ivy and am just not able to picture myself happy here or even mildly satisfied for the rest of my time. i realized that im not going to suffer through two more years of unhappiness just for an ivy degree. im going to a top ranked LAC next year as of now and hoping to get off the waitlist at another. i completely understand what you mean when you say that its a great schoo, many people would want to go there, etc etc… but if youre nto happy, why be there? its the journey that counts.

that said, i think a gap year could be awesome. i really dont see CC strengthening your application at all, do you? just not sure what that shows and i think it would confuse adcoms if you didnt have a legit reason like family or monetary issues to back it up. you could do SO many amazing things with your gap year that would be really interesting and appeal to an admissions committee. if youre applying to SFS, id suggest doing something abroad and trying to get a job at an embassy or workin g in something of the sort. or teach abroad for a year, there are some really amazing programs in areas that could truly use a talented and dedicated individual. just an idea.

@Godric. Thanks for your post. I hope everything works out for you in the future. I will definitely keep your advice in mind.

@ananapp. Hahaha, I’m really sorry to hear that; I hate when you get logged off after spending so long writing a reply. Next time, trying pressing back, and your message should still be there. Then just copy and paste.

@linababe. Thanks for your advice, I greatlly appreciate it. I think I’ll probably just go back for first semeter, and then go abroad for second semester. The problem w/ a gap year is that I want to show the adcom that I can continue to perform well academically.
