Last semester I earned all A’s and a C in Calculus AB. However I am halfway through 2nd semester, and I have all A’s and currently have a low D in Calculus AB. Although I am only halfway through 2nd semester, final exams are coming up and they account for 20% of our total grade. I am becoming very anxious, as I have never really been all that great at taking tests, and in particular calc tests. I have done decently in my math classes in years past with both B’s and A’s, however I plan on majoring in communications or something related to Human Resources. I visited my GC today to discuss options if I do fail this semester of calculus. She suggested either retaking the class next year or taking a community college course over the summer. I am not making excuses for the grades I have received so far in calc, as I take 100% responsibility for not allowing more time to study harder for the class. My question is: How would colleges react if I were to retake the 2nd semester of calculus at a community college? Would the UC’s or state colleges automatically turn me down because of my F, even with retaking the 2nd semester?
The UC’s and CSU’s will allow you to replace the F with the repeat grade as long as you retake the exact same class meaning AP Calculus AB.
However, as the OP is a junior, the repeat grade will not be visible for college applications made as a senior, unless the exact same course can be retaken in the summer.
A D or F in calculus will not mean automatic rejection from UCs or CSUs, but it will affect GPA calculations (and will not get the bonus point for an AP course) that can significantly affect admission chances.
Very true ^^^^
a D or an F would look pretty bad, especially during junior year. if you are confident that you can work hard and pull it off to at least a C, I’d recommend staying put. Otherwise, withdrawing might be a better option.
