Hey all,

I'm in Math 217 right now, and just had a couple of questions.

I've done really poorly on all of my homework sets, proof sets, and even quizzes so far. I plan on learning how to improve that by simply putting more hours into them, but based on my scores, it seems they grade fairly harshly (15/25 and 15/28 on both assignments) For those who have already taken the course, is there some sort of curve?

Yes, the class is curved to a B/B+ rather than B-/C+. I took the class last semester, and depending on your professor, he or she may also curve the quizzes to rank the students in your section only. That’s something you should ask. When I took it, the students generally did extremely poorly on the quizzes, so you only had to do a little better to get above average on the quizzes.

The hw is technically curved since the points (from hw, quizzes, exams) are lumped together at the end and curved all together. Have you been scoring above average on the hw? If not, you should be spending more time on it so that you get over the average. You in fact, should be getting 100 or near 100 because those are free points and since its curved, will only help you at the very end.

Work your ass off for the class. Because they clock you on the exams and if you don’t do well, you only have the hw and quiz curves to help you (assuming that you score above average on them, which isn’t hard to do). That’s the only reason why I got a pretty good grade, considering I didn’t do that amazing on the exams.
