Hey guys,
I was wondering if you think this curving policy is fair? For a test we just recently took, no one got an A. The highest score was a 24/30, and most of the people I know got an 8 or 9/30. He just sprung on us that even though the highest grade was an 80%, he would curve the most at 90%, making it out of 27, which I think is completely unfair considering most people did not even come close to getting a 90%, also he’s never informed us of the curving policy before this test, even though it’s now been nearly 3 months into the school year. Personally, I know many of the history teachers and they have informed me that curving policies usually are the same department wise i.e. history uses bell curve, math does not curve at all, language arts only curves mc exams, and that’s based on highest score because we rarely take those exams, but the science department curves based on a bell curve. I also take APES and if the average is in the 70’s range, my teacher curves based on the bell curve. I’ve talked to my friends in AP Chem and the teacher curves also on a bell curve. My chem honors and bio honors teachers have not curved from what I remember, but that’s simply because they were honors classes with easy tests. I do remember, on the final, since no one got a 100%, my Chem Honors teacher did technically “curve on a bell curve” and put your actual score in the gradebook, but then added e.c. based on the “curve”.
I feel like I should say something because my teacher is often his phone and does not teach, and wants to make this unfair curve where very few people will do well? He often does not calculate the class average to let us know, but I am assuming the test averages are in the 60’s range considering so little people actually do well, and he just doesn’t teach. This is random, but other than his terrible teaching, he has discussed his political beliefs with us before, saying Hillary would take all his money away and just give it to the poor, so I do have some more probable cause for complaining right LOL? My school is notorious for not firing even the most heinous of teachers, so should I even waste my time complaining?
