I've heard that some schools have cut-off dates when sports coaches/music teachers can no longer communicate with applicants. Does anyone have any idea when that date would be for most schools?

I heard of this last year, I just can’t remember when it is.

It’s the TSAO schools, and they say they don’t contact anyone with admissions decisions before March 10th, and that they won’t contact students for recruitment purposes or ask for commitments from students (including from coaches, etc.) by phone–I believe from the application deadline until March 10th. There’s some funny thing about still being able to send informational material by mail, but no phone calls and no commitments in either direction.

Yeah, I recently contacted a couple schools about a debate award I recently won, and haven’t received contact. It’s kind of weird.

I emailed my interviewers about a new award and they all replied, congratulating me and saying they’d add it to my file.

They can answer if you contact them-- but they won’t call you by phone (including coaches, etc.) and they won’t ask for OR offer commitments. But you can still send them whatever and they can send you stuff by snail mail (again, as long as it’s not letting you know their admissions decision). By the way, it IS ok if you send them a letter saying they’re your first choice-- just don’t expect them to send back a “yay, you’re in” response-- and absolutely don’t tell a school they’re your first choice if it’s not true.

And, just to be clear, it really is only the TSAO schools that are tied to these restrictions.

Tied, yes, but I think other schools choose to follow them.

Thanks for the helpful advice everyone.
