cut-off scores/semi-finalist announcements

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

i had a 216!!! u sure that 216 wouldn’t make it???

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Thank you, nemom! Does anyone know exactly what the packet consists of (that the student has to fill out, anyways?)?

@MusicSage

It asks for:

  • Basic biographical info (name, address, parents, etc.)
  • First-choice college
  • College major (from list provided)
  • Intended Career (from list provided)
  • SIX extracurriculars/activities/volunteer service “most significant to you”
–Positions held, honors won, or letters earned in each activity
–Hours spent per week for each activity
    –Grade Level(s) for each activity
  • Other “one-time” Honors/Awards with grade level achieved in (they give ONE line for this)
  • Employment information (also ONE line for this)
  • Essay, the prompt of which I believe has already been stated in this forum somewhere

You also have to ensure that NMSC is a recipient of your SAT scores (code 0085).

Has anyone asked been asked by their principal to submit a list of reasons why they should be chosen for Finalist status? I am a little surprised by this. Is it because the principal needs information to write their recommendation? Couldn’t the principal just look at my Ds records for this info? We were only given three days to submit all information to the school (we received a packet-no info for online access).

susancani, reason number one should be “so the school can brag about having a NMF.” :D

On a serious note, I’d ask the principal what they’re looking for. Going from NMSF to NMF is not competitive.

They asked for a “resume” from my son to help them write their recommendation-that way they know what he’s done for EC’s etc.-things that aren’t class related.

Thanks! I did check w/principal and she confirmed what you both said - she wanted more info on her ECs - which are her favorites, most meaningful, fulfilling, etc.

Did anyone else notice that the National Merit application is due on the day of this year’s PSAT (Oct. 13th)?

What’s the essay prompt? I don’t have time to drag through all 42 pages here…

If this forum’s participants would pick one remaining state and call the NMSC to obtain a score, we could complete the list quickly. The NMSC will release only one score per each call.

Remaining states that need to be finalized:
AK, CO, DE, IN, KY, ME, NV, NH, NC, OK, SC, TN, VT, WV, WY

These usually are set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

As per my post #502, I spoke with the same guidance counselor today, and he told me the UT cutoff is 205, not the 203 reported earlier. 205 is more plausible given past years’ cutoffs.

After searching a bit, I found that 214 is listed as the PA cutoff for 2010 on multiple sites (this thread says 216). It makes me wonder whether there are mistakes in this list. Has anybody validated these cutoff numbers?

This is just a matter of interest - the cutoff won’t be relevant for my son until a year from now.

Anyone can call NMCorp and ask for specific states’ cutoffs…

Nat’l Merit Corp 847-866-5100

Friend of my DD got a 209 in KY and made the cutoff.

If this forum’s participants would pick one remaining state and call the NMSC to obtain a score, we could complete the list quickly. The NMSC will release only one score per each call.

I think you should expect there to be mistakes. The information in the list is exactly as good as what you might expect would be produced from mostly helpful but nevertheless non-insider posters collaborating with good intention. If a GC can get it wrong, surely we can anticipate (and forgive) inaccuracies from posters. Moreover, as m2ck says, anyone can call the NMSC and verify scores. Indeed, this thread is intended to encourage this. If you find the list in error, please report it (or update the list). The reporter of the PA score says it was verified and I think we should consider this reliable until someone else who has directly contacted the NMSC posts otherwise.
