I made the TX cutoff but still haven't received notification. When is the deadline for turning in essays, etc. for the NMS Finalist application?

predator congrats. The time frame suggested in the packet is Sept 14th to get it back to the school. That give the prinicipal/gc time to work on his/her part before its due in Oct.

it (the total app.)has to be in the mail by October 12th. I bet you get your packet by the end of the week- if not, check with your counselor for sure. It came addressed to "only be opened by the principal" to our school. The counselor is the one who called him in, though. congrats...........

DS's principal confirmed that he is "on the list," but told DS that he had not received the packet. What does "on the list" mean? Thanks.

There actually is a published book with all national merit semifinalists in it. I am surprised however that he know who's on the list unless another school told him because I think its included in the packet sent with the application.

Where can this list of semifinalists be found?

Our principal received it in the master packet, the one that has the application to be completed by student in it.

I would have thought anything the principal would have seen would have been included in the packet that includes the pages my son has to complete. But he said he had not received the packet yet.

Ask him how he found out your son was a semifinalist. Something does not add up. When he gets the packet, it includes a list of all students in the school that made it plus an application for each and info on the process of filling it out, etc. There is also a comprehensive booklet on all semifinalists, so maybe another school told him.

Thanks again Proudparentof4! I'm a little puzzled. I will try and call him, although getting through their new automated phone system is like breaking into Fort Knox!

Let me know. I am positive everything is fine. School is a little crazy probably with just starting back.

For some reason, our school decided to ignore the instructions and complete the principal's page on the application before giving it to us, but not the other two pages with transcript type information. I'm guessing your school is completing the school portions too. I think if I were you, I would go and personally talk to the principal and have him tell you how he found out. The list was right in the packet.

If it is any comfort, with the exception of the essay, the student's portion is very easy to complete, and someone has posted the essay in another thread. Good luck.

Thank you, Crazy Mom. I don't think the school personnel are working on their part, since the Principal told my son he doesn't have the packet but to keep bugging him so he doesn't forget. I told ds to tell the principal he will spend his Peer Mentor (They assist the kids who need help on the state exam.) period sorting mail, if necessary. I will definitely call him.

I'm glad to know our part is pretty easy to complete. I do want to check their part, too, if possible. I forwarded the essay prompt to ds, and he is still in the "thinking phase."

I didn't have to call. I'm not sure what why the delay, but ds brought home the entire packet today. Thanks!

Fantastic Canmom. I know you are relieved. Dd already filled out her part. We have an appointment Thurs to meet with our principal and we are going to work on school portion then. With all my dd dual credit college work (she takes courses at our community college and get high school and college credit) the transcript part will be a little difficult. Anyone here know if she is taking dual credit, if she is considered part-time college, specifically would she check part-time on the question, are you enrolled in college now?

Crazymom, my school is late on notifying the kids as well. Can you link the essay thread? I searched, but only found the 2006 threads from last year.

I think as long as she is still getting high school credit for the courses, she is not considered "part-time college" even though the classes are taken at the college. Perhaps your principal or GC will be able to tell you for sure - or another parent here on CC. Do you think they are asking this question to determine the difficulty of the student's courseload or to determine if they are at the right grade level for scholarship consideration?

Bessie, I have few computer skills for posting a link. It is in the Official NM Cutoff 2007 thread in this folder, page 14, post 199. Trying to cut and paste from there as follows:

The student essay prompt is titled "Essay about yourself". The prompt then continues:

In your own words, describe your personal characteristics, accomplishments, primary interests, plans and goals. What sets you apart? Your essay should be about 500 words. Write in black ink on this form or securely affix a computer-printed copy with non-glare tape. Material exceeding this space cannot be used.

The space on the form into which this essay should fit is ~ 8" high by 6 5/8" wide.

Also, the rest of the information is really easy, such as parental info, activities and ECs, major and career choices, etc. The essay is the only thing that should take much time.

Thanks eg1. I was thinking that since she's still in high school, I would not put she was in college. She did make sure to mention it in the essay, and her principal will as well. That should cover the bases.
