"Cutoff" SAT/ACT Scores

Of course I know there is no real "cutoff" score per se for SAT/ACT that will get you into a "good" college. What I really mean is, what are scores on these two tests that wouldn't hurt your application for getting into elite colleges (HYPSM etc)? How would these scores be different for different races? (I'm half Asian, does that mean my "cutoff score" would fall between white and asian scores? lol) What are the tiers of SAT/ACT scores?

I used to think 34 and 2200-2250 would get you "in the basket" per se, as in they won't hurt your chances of getting into top colleges at all. But recently some people have been telling me that college admissions have gotten a lot harder and 35/2300 are the real "cutoffs". Thoughts?

2250+ is the common consensus.
2250-2350 scores have negligible differences
2350+ is slightly more impressive, although that score hardly ever decides whether or not you’ll be admitted
As long as you’re “in range” for a school, an SAT score won’t hurt you.</p>

No college is going to admit that being a certain race gives you a different cutoff score, lol. You’ll be fine with a 2250+.

@extremecouponing‌ thanks for the response! Do other people think 2250 and 2300 have a negligible difference? How about 34 & 35 on act?

I’m not well versed in the ACT, so I can’t help with that.
Yeah, a friend of mine who has worked in admissions/currently owns a college counseling business has said that the difference between a 2290 and a 2310 /seems/ like a lot, but really is only one/two questions at most. Colleges know that and thus, don’t place an extreme weight on a 2290 v a 2310, or a similar variation thereof.

Granted, that’s just one person’s word and my own, but she has a lot of experience in the field.

Check out this thread regarding myths vs fact of ACT scores at top schools, it might answer your question.
