Ok, my daughter who is in her first week at Point Park as a MT major reports that signs were posted for Freshman MT students to re-audition in 2 weeks with the heads of the MT Dept.
Of course it doesn't say "We are looking to cut" but rumors are rampant (she says) that 7 freshman will be cut. What do my seasoned veterans think? Are there any lurking Point Park reps out there? Could this be just a way to get to know the new kids better?
I know Point Park does make cuts but I thought it would happen much later then the first 3 weeks of school.
I told her to relax, take a deep breath and prepare for this audition as she would any other.
Now, I need to take a breath myself....

In VP at DD's school all students have to audition the 2nd day of classes, including all the freshmen. It is for placements during the year. Maybe that's it for your DD but I am sure someone from Point Park would know more.

I cannot specifically address Point Park, but think it unlikely that the intent is to make cuts at this point in time.

I think it more likely that since PP is one of the schools where the entire auditor panel doesn't see every student, they just want to have a common frame of reference for all incoming students. Several schools have something similar in the first few weeks of school. That having been said, I do know of one girl at another institution who had developed severe vocal problems between audition time and when she showed up in the fall, and on the advice of their resident vocal therapist, advised her that she would not be able to start with the fall classes, because it would be too detrimental to her vocal health.

hushinfazen - I highly doubt that they would cut this early in the program. It could easily be that they are trying to get a better understanding of where everyone is at in terms of development. If I remember correctly at PP you don't get accepted into the BFA from the get-go, but you will get a recommendation the end of freshman year, whether they think you will be better of pursuing a BFA or BA.

I have a feeling that MuscThCC may be right on. But, rather than speculate though and feel uneasy about things, I would suggest that your D simply asks one of the heads directly. The people at PP seemed very approachable, and I would think that they would be happy to answer any questions the freshmen may have.

Thank-You, I so appreciate the voices of reason. I knew intellectually that had to be the answer but emotionally, I was letting her get to me a little. She is so happy with her choice and while is is true about needing to be accepted into the BFA program, she loves it there.
I will update...in 2 weeks.

Remember that there is NO major qualitative difference between the BA and BFA programs at PPU. Many successful PPU MT grads did not do the BFA track of their own choosing. (So tell your D NOT to stress about that, either.)
