CVW &/or SS

Is getting invited to CVW a help in getting accepted to SS ? Ever hear of one getting invite to CVW (after SS app closes) and not get into SS ?

I believe CVW is reserved only for seniors, whereas NASS is for juniors. Regardless, the two events are independent of each other. For CVW, you only need an invitation, but for NASS you have to complete an application.

^^^^

Correct. NASS is a wee-long summer program for rising seniors. CVW is a program offered during the academic year to well-qualified candidates (seniors). The two are not related. People can do both, and some do. Some only do one or the other. Some do neither.

My view is that, if you can financially afford it and are offered the opportunity, you should do both. Every chance to interact with mids and to see what your life at USNA will be like is an opportunity that shouldn't be missed. However, not doing either NASS or CVW will NOT hurt your chances for an appointment. Both are offered for your benefit.

They are both independent programs. Missing both programs will not necessarily hurt a candidate's opportunity for an appointment - BUT -- if this will probably be brought up in your interview. If you can't go due to finances, fine. If you can't go due to a major participation in a sport or academic program, fine. If you say you didn't go because you just didn't want to, had better things to do, etc., that will hurt you. Being able to say "when I was at SS, I experienced this and thought...." or being able to say "when I went to my CVW, I saw this and really though...." it makes it very easy to see that candidates knowledge of them actually knowing what they are getting into. Just learning the military terminology and phrases, shows more interest. This is a very, very competitive process - when all things are equal among candidates, if one has seen the routine and knows s/he still wants to do it more than ever and the other has seen nothing and thinks s/he wants to do it, you go with the candidate who has more experience. That does not mean if you don't go, it will discount things... I mean, there are only limited slots to go. If you don't go - try to get other Navy and/or military experiences -- can you shadow someone at their job in the military, can you run with an ROTC unit on a weekend?

Subject never came up in My Mid's interview, he was interviewed by a grad. I wonder how a BGO would react when candidate asks why you did not attend either SS or CVW and kid says "because I got turned down."

Agree that you should go if opportunity presents itself but if not going is somehow held against a candidate there is then something wrong with the system. IMO

(Incidentally mine did get turned down and he has been very successful at USNA)

Actually - I think it would be a good thing to hear and see "because I got turned down"... and hear how the reaction is to keeping trying, which is a very worthy thing. As I said - there are limited slots to go, so it's not expected to attend. I'm just hearing the candidate who says "because I didn't feel like applying" or "because I didn't think it was that important to experience it" or "because I already know all about the Naval Academy and didn't think I needed to go." The actual going isn't the key - it's the discussion around it that helps.

I'm sure there are candidates that get turned down all the time because they are excellent candidates. I don't know any behind the scenes reasons for the selection process.

i got both. both complemented each other very well but if i only could do one it would be ss.

The question is not the merit of one experience over the other. The question is :
Has anyone heard of someone getting a CVW invite and then not getting accepted into the SS ?
New question :
If candidate is invited to a Feb or March CVW, is the candidate's visit (eval results) incorporated into the decision to accept the candidate into SS ?

Camillethecat-
Summer Seminar happens before CVW. CVW cannot help you with SS. Summer Seminar is for applicants after Junior year and CVW is for candidates during Senior year.
