D in PreCalculus - Transfer to UCR

I got a D in Precalculus this spring semester. I needed to get a C to transfer to UCR. I have been searching the forums but there seem to be competing answers.

I have a 3.7 GPA (now that I got a D)... I got A's in every class, except 2 B's, now this D.

Will Admissions take these issues on a case by case basis? (I sent them an email).

How much does your GPA matter if you get a D in the Transferable Math class?

If I retake the class this summer, will they accept it for Fall 2011?

Thank you for your input.

In the past UCR has had real difficulties in attracting students and was known to be more forgiving than the other UCs in terms of making exceptions to the rules that accepted students must complete all their required coursework by Spring of the year in which they transfer and can not get grades lower than a C in a transferrable course. In fact, for a long time UCR was the UC referral campus which meant that students who were UC eligible but not accepted at any other UC were offered admission there.

However, recently UCR’s fortunes have improved somewhat. They are no longer the referral campus and the number and quality of their applicants has risen. While this is good news for UCR it could be bad news for you. The UC transferrable Math course is probably second in importance only to the UC transferrable English course. Failing to get a satisfactory grade in it is certainly grounds to rescind you despite your otherwise strong transcript.

You should call the Admissions office at UCR first thing Monday morning and see if they will let you repeat it during the Summer session. Apparently, UCR has agreed to this in the past with some accepted applicants but it would mean making an esception to the requirement that all such coursework must by succesfully completed by the end of the Spring term or semester and they may not be as willing to do that now as they were in the past.

Another problem you will face is even if they do approve it, getting into a class at a CCC at this late date is going to be very difficult. Due to budget constraints, many CCCs have cancelled their Summer sessions and others have cut back significantly on the number of courses they are offering. I know that all Math classes at the four CCCs in the Sacramento area have been closed for the Summer session since early May.
