D interested in BA theater program at Drew

My D was accepted at Drew and is interested in their BA theater program. Drew tells you, when you call, that the Princeton Review rated them the #1 BA theater program in the country. Is there anyone who can talk about theater at Drew? I would love to hear info from students or parents who know something about it.

The theater program is excellent. I was not an theater major, but I did take a theatre class, and the professors are truly excellent. Because of the school’s small size, theater majors at Drew will get many opportunities that they might not get elsewhere.

There is a very heavy focus on playwriting, as opposed to acting. There are three or four theaters on campus (e.g., Kirby Theatre, Commons Theatre), and student-written plays are routinely being performed.

The only possible caveat I will tell you about the theater program is that it is a lifestyle at Drew. For most of the Theater majors who I knew, Theater was their entire life – they took theater classes, wrote and acted in plays in their spare time, went to theater parties, ate dinner with other thespians, etc. Not really a bad thing, but just be aware of this.

Thanks for the reply! My D is particularly interested in musical theater. Were there many musicals performed during your time at Drew?

I do not remember any musicals, but I graduated about a decade ago, so it possible that things have changed. Most of the plays performed were tragedies or dark comedies.

Our S will graduate from Drew as a theatre major this year. I can tell you that the program has been outstanding, and that some of the theatre majors from earlier years are doing some pretty cool things after graduation.

That said, my big caution for your D is that Drew does not focus on musical theatre, at least in terms of the productions they put up. They do a great number of dramatic and student-written/directed pieces every year, but musical shows are done only about every other year. This was a selling point for our S, but seems like a major drawback for your D.

My D was just accepted to the theater department and was wondering if there were any current theater majors willing to share their experiences?
