Freshman d will be attending UCLA this fall. When we tried to sign up for orientation last week, the ones available were sessions 109-111, and we are on vacation then -- not to mention the person I talked to on the phone said lots of the classes would be filled already.

So we decided to do non- attending orientation enrollment instead, which d got an appt date for Aug 4 and d will register online for her classes.

D is a history major, and may also do a second major in business.

Ap Scores - wise, she has gotten a 4 Euro His, 4 Ap us Hist, 5 calculus AB, 4 or 5 in Eng comp and will probably get a 4 or 5 in Eng lit (still waiting for scores). . .as I understand it, she won't have to take math or English.

What classes would you suggest. Some one on these boards has suggested taking an extra class (maybe 16-18 units), and then droppng the class she least likes. Where on the UCLA site do you find the required GE classes for a history major type student ?

What is normal course load-- 10-12 units/ quarter? ...I am not as familar with quarter system. I am used to semester system where the norm is 15/semester or 30/year.

Want to get a jump ahead in researching this. Poor d still has 1 more week of school -- and finals -- to go.

Yes, taking 4 classes for the first quarter is fine and dropping the least desirable class by the fourth week (without penalty) is reasonable.

12-13 units per quarter is the norm - 3 classes.

As someone who has taken 7-8 history courses (lower and upper-division), I would suggest:

History 2C with Ruiz (Have only heard excellent things about this professor; have not taken him personally)
History 9E with Woods (I've taken two of his courses; he's great for incoming freshmen)
General Education Course
Foreign Language Course (if not already taken care of)

I'd say, choose the first two and either the GE or the FL course. History 1A and 1B are offered - Phillips is incredibly dry. Slaving away through his lectures would be misery. Frank is a terrible professor.

a poor Bruin... slaving away through finals (like the rest of them).

Hi, I have a similar problem and I was going to create a topic, but I'll just post here.

I'm an international student and I'm still in the process of getting my I-20 (I have yet to send the Financial Statement -_-) and I don't know if there will be enough time to get the VISA and get everything ready to even go to the last orientation. Should I do this online registration thing?

Also, I HAVE to take the math placement exam AND the English writing placement, since I did not take the AP exams... How am I going to do this?

Oh, and I forgot, I'm going to attend the Mandatory New Student Workshop for international students around mid-September.

Oh dear, I will be attending orientation session 109 and I'm guessing I won't be able to take Chem 14A, Math 3A nor Life Sci 1? This sucks. If only we could sign up for classes on our own in the summer, and make it separate from the orientation session.

deutsch: youll be able to get into them -- i wouldnt take all 3 -- usually math3a and chem14a or math3a/ls1 for your first quarter . . . dont worry about getting into 3a/14a. . . u might not get your favorite lecture... but youll most likely get the classes
