Hi! I am an incoming Freshman, Industrial Design major. I am nervous and excited for my college life at DAAP. I would like to know if there is anything I should prepare ahead of time(art supplies, tools…) or anything I should do this summer to prepare myself for DAAP life. Advice would be appreciated!! @babybearcat congratulations on your DAAP acceptance, My daughter is also an incoming Freshman, Industrial Design major. I don’t have any advice about what you can do now. We did sign up for orientation in June though so I’m hoping we have a better rides of what to expect after that.
The DAAP orientation is very informative. A supply list is provided and everything on it is offered in a kit available for purchase through the DAAP store. I recall being able to preorder this kit at that time. There was a presentation by IT —DAAP has their own IT people! - lots of support is offered - we purchased the computer our daughter needed from the UC bookstore. There is another art store off campus - Plaza Art - if the DAAP store is out of something.

The DAAP portion of orientation is major specific so all of the students in the auditorium will be your classmates- a good time to make those first connections.
my daughter is going into her senior year as an ID student. like designmomma said. at orientation they will be given a list…there is a kit you can buy at the DAAP store. just know this…you will spending alot of money on supplies they need for projects…but take into mind like many other majors there are rarely any books to bujy. you will need a really good computer and they will talk about that at orientation as well.
Yes , kits are available. One item students really like to pick out personally is tackle-box type of storage—you might want to consider that as at home purchase. Have your student keep a running wish list for holiday gifts - marker sets, dremmel and bits, etc. first year supplies are pretty standard, but the kids quickly develop preferences 
Thanks! We were going to buy the tackle box but the woman at the Art store said that some of the boxes didn’t fit into the lockers at DAAP.
How much do you think you spend a month in supplies? Trying to estimate those “extra” college expenses. Thank you all!
@flmom2018 here’s a list of expenses my son had as an ID student:
Freshman Year, 2 semesters
Laptop Computer = 2400
Software and supplies= 1160
Sophomore Year, 1 Semester
Software and supplies= 360
Many of the supplies purchased in year 1 will last for a while. The software expenses include some one time costs and a monthly subscription for Adobe. He often make purchases from Amazon, the school art store and the dollar store to complete projects.
These are all the supply expenses we’ve had so far. Hopefully we won’t see a large increase as he gets further into the program.
