...to america. is there an option for guest housing in michigan? if not, where's the nearest hotel/accomodation to consider?

You mean he wants to help you settle in your first week before classes begin?

If he is gonna get a car, I'd recommend the Hampton Inn (North) just outside North campus on Greene Road. If not, the Campus Inn is only a couple blocks from Central campus.

I also think the Bell Tower Hotel and the Michigan League have rooms right on campus.

no, he wants to tour the city. been wanting to do that for a long time, but didn't due to work commitment. thought he'd jump on this opportunity to visit the states.

are campus inn, hampton inn, bell tower, etc inside U of M? dooes he (or myself) need to apply or something?

The Inn at the Michigan League is the only University-owned hotel. Other than this, the Campus Inn and the Bell Tower are within walking distance of Central Campus. On North Campus, it's possible for student families to rent a furnished apartment for stays of a week or more through Northwood apartments. From Northwood, it's possible to get to Central Campus on the University bus.

Here's a hotel accomodation link that might be useful:
http://www.umich.edu/~info/hotel.html

Btw, the Hamption Inn (North) is a Hilton HHonors hotel.

There is a really cheap place (motel)close to campus, called Lamp Post Inn, its in the Link.

Lamp Post Inn is in a good neighborhood - but it's not within walking distance. Well, it's about 2-3 miles from campus.

What country? India?

do we need to book rooms before arrival?

I'd recommend it, because you never know what's going on at any given time in Ann Arbor. Some weekends it can be hard to find a hotel room.
