Dance major - Performance/business

Hi
We live in the UK (Military) with d due to go to college next year. Feeling 'out of the loop' as lived away for so many years. Looking for a good BA / BFA performance college with teaching / business as she wants to start dance schools when her performing career decreases.

Been is the UK system, so SATs and US college admission procedure all new to us. Any advice welcome!

I would suggest ordering a copy of Dance Magazine’s guide to colleges. Many schools that offer a dance performance degree also offer pedagogy. At many, if not most, students can double major or minor in business. I’m mostly familiar with the ballet focused programs, but, for example, at the Indiana University, ballet students receive a BS in ballet performance. They can also receive a degree in an outside major, which can be business. At NYU, BFA students in dance at Tisch can major in business or arts admin in another school of NYU. Many students in the U of Utah program double major, and that program offers a pedagogy concentration as well as ballet performance. Anyway, get the book which will give lots of information on all types of dance programs and then get on the school’s websites. If your daughter is ballet focused, you might already be familiar with Ballet Talk for Dancers, which has tons of information about ballet focused college programs, although not so much about outside majors. Good luck.

Thank you - I’ve ordered the 11/12 College Guide from Dance Magazine today. D is a great ballet technician/performer, but prefers jazz! Thank you for your help.

Point Park University has a wonderful program. You can choose what track you want and jazz is one of them. It has a great reputation and is well known here in the US.

Hi. If you want a good LA school where she can do both I would look at Muhlenberg in Allentown PA. They have very good dance but alot of kids do a double major. Point Park is mainly a conservatory. You cant double major. Great school if you just want to dance. Another one would be Slippery Rock Unversity in PA. Great up and coming dance school where you can do other things too. I think you can track to be a teacher. My dd is at Shenandoah University where she is a BFA. There is no room for another major but they do have a BA track where you can learn about arts business and they also have a teacher track where you are certified to teach in the public schools. When you audition you tell them which you are applying. My dd loves it there. Good luck with your search.

Hi!! With your daughter looking into both dance and business, I recommend Pace University’s BFA Commercial Dance program. The program is built around ballet and jazz, but dancers take other styles like tap, hip hop, contemporary, etc… With this BFA program, it’s pretty easy to declare a business minor through the Lubin School of Business at Pace! I’m a current sophomore, so if you have any questions feel free to ask!
