How early in advance do people usually ask?

it depends on how formal the dance is. for prom, you should ask at least 2 weeks in advance, but for a semi, a week or so is probably okay

if youre thinking about it now, why not ask? she'll appreciate the extra notice. anything more than like a month is a little too far in advance i think

just my $.02

A week in advance? That seems way too short notice. My school doesn't have dates except winter formal and prom, so maybe I'm off base about semi-formal or homecoming or whatever. I notice that most people have their date picked out 3 weeks to a month ahead of time. The guideline is that girl should try to get her dress and her date in the same week.

I know a lot of girls won't go to things like that if they don't have a date, or they'll plan to go with a bunch of other friends who are dateless (so it would be inappropriate to be the only one with a date).

Like Katie said, if you're thinking about asking, then ask.

uh, i askd a guy 2 come 2 the dance w/ me the day b4 b/c i didn't want the entire week (if i had askd early) 2 b awkward. we had a yummy time. yum. he's hot. ;) anyway, go ahead and ask someone as whn u thnk u should or they'll go w/ someone else or their group of pals.

if youre a guy, be considerate and think in advance how much time your date will need to get everything done HAHAHA like getting their ideal dress, setting massive appointments for to get hair done, nails done, etc. yeah. not cool to make them all panicking if its a last minute thing

somewhere ranging from two weeks to one month is optimal

Prom is in mid April at my school and most of the asking gets done by the end of February.

It should be done very early, I would think. I was asked by a girl to walk with her during graduation in Junior year. So ask whenever you find someone, really. If you notice someone, chances are some other loser does too.
