Dancewave - Dancing through College and Beyond

Moved this post to this forum. Thank you for all suggestions on navigating in this HUGE forum.

Can anyone share their experience participating in Dancewave - Dancing through College and Beyond? What was your outcome? Do it help or deter your dancer chances? Any feedback would be helpful. Thank you.

If there are more than 1 or 2 schools there auditioning students that your dancer is interested in and if getting there is not too difficult geographically/financially, I’d say go for it. It’s a way to get a number of auditions done in one weekend for basically one price. It would not have been worth it for us, given the list of schools my DD had at the time that she wanted to audition for.

Thank you. I appreciate your feedback. I’ve gotten some private messages that seem to have a lot backlash for some reason. I don’t really understand what that is all about.

I’ve been researching it and it appears that not all schools listed have auditions. Looks like some may just be there. Perhaps just information on that particular institutions program.

Scheduling and doing auditions is hard work. You can end up with a very busy January if you audition widely, which is usually advisable given how competitive it is (we had 9 auditions scheduled over 5 consecutive weekends this year, more than half of which were out of town).

So looking at options to do some auditions in the fall is a good idea, especially as some programs will tell you if you passed the audition within 2-3 weeks afterwards, even before all the rest of the college application has been processed. Get those set up as early as possible. Just meeting with representatives at a convention without doing an audition seems less useful.

Dancemama I’m curious what negative feedback you are receiving regarding Dancewave . My DD is registered to attend and audition. Hoping it’s worthwhile. We are also doing college visits while there so should be a fun week regardless!

Hi MomL98. The negative feedback was not about dancewave. Please share your experience after! I would like for my DD to attend next year.

@MomL98 I hope you’ll share your thoughts about it here after your daughter attends, so others can learn more about it!

Yes I definitely will! I haven’t been able to connect with anyone who has gone in the past, so we really have no idea what to expect.

MomL98 did you see anywhere that they would need to apply to the institution before the auditions? Just curious as some of the websites say they need to apply for the school and then audition. Perhaps it is different for DTCB…

@dancemama No I didn’t see anything about that. I had the same question. A lot of the bigger schools don’t seem to be auditioning there. I’m guessing that the way it works is that if you pass their audition they would give you a tentative acceptance based on if you get into the school, but I’m not totally sure. All it said was bring enough headshots and dance resumes for the schools you want to consider. I’ll let everyone know after we get back how it worked!

Ok, thank you very much. I think it’s wonderful opportunity. Super excited for you guys!

My daughter went to this forum her junior year and found it very helpful–it’s a college fair just for schools with dance programs, and she learned about several that weren’t on her radar, including the one she ended up attending. The panel discussions, about auditions, financial aid, etc, were also helpful, and there was one event where they could talk to students at the different colleges that she appreciated. She did not audition there her senior year because she wanted to audition at the campuses and get a better feel for the schools, but in retrospect I wish she had, it would have saved us a lot of traveling. I recommend it if you are in the New York area or planning to come here for college tors.

So we’re all set and scheduled to leave next week for a few college visits and to attend and audition at Dancewave and she’s diagnosed with mono yesterday ?. I feel so bad for her! We’re still planning on going at this point and we’ll see how she is on that Sunday for auditions. Now my biggest question is if she’s allowed to re-audition at any of the schools, especially since their onsite auditions are more comprehensive. I think we’ll contact some of the schools she’s really interested in and double check. The timing of getting mono is never good, but this couldn’t be worse ?

So sorry to hear that. I hope she feels better soon. The schools will be there providing information. She will be able to introduce herself. It’s still early in the audition stages. Good luck

@MomL98 I’m so sorry to hear that. Terrible timing! Do ask schools about reauditioning, and do your digging here and on other sites too. Unless they specifically say a dancer cannot audition more than once, I’d assume that you can.

@MomL98 how is your daughter feeling? Are you going to be able to attend the program this weekend?

@dancemama Yes, we are here this weekend. She’s going to try and just do her best tomorrow for the audition. We did find out if she isn’t accepted after this audition she can audition at the school, so that was good news. Today was the college fair and it was great! They assign a check in time for you to be there, and also a check out time. They have you wait in a theater for your check in time group to be called, and then you go into the college fair part. They had the schools scattered throughout a few different rooms, and she had the schools identified she wanted to audition for and visited them first to talk with them and drop off her headshot and resume. Then she talked with others she was interested in, but who weren’t auditioning there. They didn’t usher everyone out at their check out time which was nice because some of the schools had long lines, and it took kore time. We didn’t go to the panel discussions so she could go back to the hotel and rest for awhile, but we did go back for the college showcase tonight where about 8 different schools presented work. It was interesting and she was glad we went! Audition is tomorrow and she’s in group 1 which means an early check in time. Fingers crossed she feels a little better then!

@MomL98 sounds fabulous! Did you hear anything about the academic acceptance and how that process works since she is auditioning first? Great news on the second audition too. I know it’s early but any announcements on next years fair? We like to plan early!

Sending your daughter well wishes and good luck for tomorrow. Fingers crossed for you both too!

@dancemama Audition was this morning. She was in group 1 (there were 3 total) so check-in was 8:30-9:00, then a pre-audition movement class, then the audition consisted of a ballet and modern class. She was done at noon, and then there was an optional panel discussion afterwards which she didn’t attend. It really varied from school to school as far as the admission process. Most said that they would send an e-mail and follow up regardless, and most just encouraged them to apply ASAP? No news about next year that I could find. It will be interesting to see how it goes in the next few weeks/months!

@MomL98 Did your daughter hear from any schools after the audition? My daughter was there (also in group 1). So far she was admitted to several schools, invited for a callback for one, and a few haven’t yet been in touch. I haven’t seen anyone else posting their results from the audition–it was such a time and $ saver to not have to travel as much for auditions. I hope your daughter is feeling better!
