Danforth Scholars

Does anyone know when applicants will be notified if they are selected? I'm very curious. I've searched the WUSTL website, but it doesn't say. Thanks in advance!

Dear geniezclone,

The selection process involves up to 40 finalists being invited to campus March 30-April 3 for a required interview weekend. I am not sure when the finalists will be notified of the actual awards, but I am sure the weekend would reveal that. Good luck!

What is the Danforth Scholars program?

Isn't Danforth the religious zealot who backed Clarence Thomas. Total loser.

Momofthree: Thanks! I didn't know that finalists will be invited to campus. Do you know whether students will receive some kind of letter or pamphlet about the program when they have been nominated by their counselors? My counselor has nominated me, but I have not received anything from wustl about it, so I'm kinda worried. Do you also know when students will be notified if they are finalists?

College5812: The Danforth Scholars program gives scholarships, as well as special housing, to 12 students each year.

um, that's weird...i got my stuff from danforth ages ago, and it's the app is due on saturday (arrived, not postmarked) so you'd better check with your counselor

what is danforth?

From post #5:

The Danforth Scholars program gives scholarships, as well as special housing, to 12 students each year.

:)

How do you apply for it? I didn't see it on the scholarship applications.

Named in honor of William H. and Elizabeth Gray Danforth, the chancellor and first lady of the University from 1971 to 1995, the Danforth Scholars Program is a tribute to their legacy of exemplary leadership and service

You have to ask your guidance counselor about being nominated for the scholarship.

oh, I see. Is it too late already to apply? Are there actual applications you have to fill out as well?

it's too late to be nominated. The application is due Jan. 15. (the extra application wants two essays as well)

hey geniezclone....are u applying for any of the other scholarships in addition to the danforth scholars? Good luck on that! I hope we find out in february.....(fingers crossed)

Can somone help me with something on the Danforth Scholars Program application? The app has a plce to list up to 3 school activities, and up to 3 leadership activites. What exactly is the difference? For example if I was the president of a club, or the captain of a team, wouldn't that qualify as a school activity a n d a leadership activity?

Thanks,

Wash U Class of '09

how come most people never even found about about the danforth scholarship? i was never told that i had to ask my counselor for a nomination or anything. it was never publicised. :(

I know :(. I wish i had known ahead of time as well. It would have been another chance to win a scholarship

I was nominated for this scholarship....does it help me get into the school itself? basically, do admissions officers see that i was nominated for the scholarship? i figure it is quite an honor since only a couple kids per school can be nominated

The reason some of you didn't hear about it was that you're guidance counselor didn't nominate you because they didn't think you had a shot at it - I think. Does anyone know the answer to my prior question?

Bananapeel, I do think there is obvious overlap here but I think that the format gives you more opportunities to list your activities. S mentioned athletics and theater on the school activities portion (noting where he did have captainship there) and then listed other leadership stuff on the lines for leadership. Keep in mind that they will also see your entire application, including a resume if you send one, as you sign a statement releasing that info to the committee. Hope that helps!

thank u momofthree, i just wanted to make sure that there w a s an overlap and I wasn't just being an idiot or something. thanks.
