@homerdog RD is definitely a disadvantage (even discounting for athletes and legacies). Given the high quality of the ED pool, many schools want to admit (and lock in) a large number (at least 50%) so that stats look even better for yield on USNews, etc. Accordingly, unhooked RD admit rates are lower, by a significant percentage, than unhooked ED admit rates. But don’t apply ED if you have any hesitation about going to the school. It is supposedly not a disadvantage at MIT and Yale and a very few other places, but many admissions offices favor those who want a school as their definite first choice — they want people who are happy to be there.
@LongHairedAchaean I was asking specifically about Dartmouth and ED. I know ED shows interest and it helps in general. But I’ve got good info from a Dartmouth alum who says that it’s not as much of an advantage at Dartmouth compared to some other schools like Northwestern or Duke. I think a school like Dartmouth still gets a very high yield from its RD kids so ED isn’t used in a way to increase their yield per se. Just looking to confirm that.
IF Dartmouth’s ED doesn’t provide an advantage for Dartmouth’s yield why doesn’t Dartmouth use a SCEA like Princeton, Harvard or Stanford? I would think the advantage for Dartmouth is that ED locks in top students who would otherwise apply to Penn, Brown, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, etc. where ED is available.
Does anyone have an idea how strong Dartmouth’s cs program is? Theres not an electrical engineering major there which worries me
Gosh I guess this is me now. I just submitted my application last night. Good luck and fingers crossed!
Submitted yesterday for ED, Biochem/biology/biochem engineering focus and art portfolio (weird combo I know). Good luck to everyone applying, I wish the best to Y’all!!!
Good luck guys. I’ll see you all during RD
I applied ED, but haven’t gotten my email from Dartmouth yet. It’s been about 24 hours – am I just being paranoid? Is my application really in? Does anyone have tips or insight into this?
@AudreyKang check common app to make sure its actually submitted. See if the recs and stuff are downloaded. If yes, you should be fine
I contracted senioritis the moment I submitted my application on October 3. I have a lot of catching up to do at School. DId any of you guys submit your apps this early?
@MyGPAIsAnL THANKFULLY I got the email a few hours after I posted – really was paranoia. Is anyone else submitting an art portfolio?
@rhine7567 I have so much respect for you. I can’t afford to get senioritis (IB student problems lol), but have what we call "IB-itis,"which is more about doing work that’s technically not useless but definitely not gonna help your GPA. For instance, spending 2 hours on a sketch of a eukaryotic cell or using the whole weekend to write teacher thank yous lol.
IB is definitely more work. Hang in there!
I also did ED Dartmouth, has anyone received an email for an interview?
Also, were any of yall in Dartmouth Bound? Curious how many applied
@Shocker7 I just got an email today, don’t worry too much about it – it’s not like they can hold it against you if you weren’t invited.
I also didn’t go to Dartmouth Bound, I think I got it confused with Dimensions or something because I thought it was only for accepted students? Idk.
@AudreyKang if you don’t mind me asking where are you from? I am from the chicagoland area and some of my friends that applied to Dartmouth ED haven’t received anything for an interview
@Shocker7 I’m from western Massachusetts. But I’d still give them some time since there are a few more weeks (2 or 3) until interviews won’t be considered anymore.
all right thanks
@Shocker7 I haven’t received an email in regards to an interview either. I do know that interviews are not required.
Have kids at your high school received Dartmouth interviews in the past?
@Shocker7 & @ SnatchCat - Waiting for an ED interview is stressful. Even for yours truly, a parent. By Thanksgiving last year, S still hadn’t received an interview request, even though the interview was supposed to be conducted by the sibling of a work colleague. The Monday after Thanksgiving, S followed up. The interviewer advised that S’s name never made his list of potential candidates. The interview ultimately did happen, but the circumstances were stressful. As an aside, S deferred from ED but admitted RD and is currently attending.
IMHO, interviewers get their lists relatively quickly. If by chance you have not been contacted by next week, I’d definitely send a BRIEF note requesting status.
Just one parent’s two cents. Good luck!
