Has anyone who has been giving an interview visited Dartmouth yet?
thanks @BuffDad2022 i’ll wait and see what happens
Yes, I got an email about a week ago and I’ve been there once, this summer.
@SnatchCat Yes! I’ve visited, and have been invited to interview.
My S received interview invitation this weekend. Southwest Colorado.
My D applied ED and she hasn’t been contacted yet about an interview which surprises me bc she is a good candidate and I am a Dartmouth alum. Anyone else in central MA waiting for an interview? I know they are not that important but still…makes me nervous!
Hey @moomom2 , I just read this on the Dartmouth website:
"Interviews are arranged after you have submitted your application. If one of the following two circumstances is true, you may request an interview by contacting us at aap@dartmouth.edu.
- Two weeks have passed since you submitted your application and you have not been invited to have an interview.
- You live outside of the United States or in a remote region within the United States and you suspect that there may not be alumni interviewers in your area.
Contacting us will not guarantee an interview, but we will try our best to schedule one"
I think emailing them could be a good idea, because it is possible your daughter was accidentally taken off their list.
Best of luck.
For anyone wondering about contents of a Dartmouth interview, here is what happened for me:
- Introduction, my interviewer was really interested in my background, so we spent a lot of time talking about ideas and international perspectives that I had to offer.
- She specifically asked "what are you looking for in a college?" and I gave four or five more general things I was looking for, connecting each with a very specific element of Dartmouth.
- We talked about major, how I decided on this major, what I could add to the environment etc.
- She wanted to know exactly how I had found Dartmouth -- the one question I was unprepared for, you should have something to say about this!!
- I showed her my portfolio and some other work I had brought with me. Would 10/10 recommend bringing material with you that you're proud of.
We were from the same area, so we talked a lot about schools and atmosphere.
My advice: this really should be a conversation, focus on making things flow smoothly and don’t force discussion of things that don’t come naturally. Definitely be engaged, I would say I talked for maybe half the time, my interviewer talked a lot about her own experiences, so be ready to comment on and follow what they say.
Hi! I just got done with my interview, it went very smoothly and I had a great time with it (lasted about 1 hr 45mins). I’m located in Southwest CT and was contacted about a week prior via direct email arranging a spot and time. I would agree that bringing a small resume is helpful although my interviewer asked me to email it to him after the matter instead.
We talked a lot about philosophy and cultural diversity which was really fun and comfortable as well as Dartmouth parents (I’m a legacy). We talked mostly about my extracurriculars and my experience spending most of my childhood on a farm growing food and raising animals.
Don’t stress out too much about the interview guys, If you get one that’s awesome, but if you don’t, that doesn’t mean you’re out of the game by any means. Relax. Take a breath. It’s a stressful process. I hope everyone is doing well in the college search overall and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for all of us possible 23’s!!!
Have people in the Chicagoland area gotten interviews or emails for interviews yet?
my son (Chicagoland) still did not
My son from Florida had an interview a couple of days ago.
Anyone want to comment on the latest lawsuit against Psychology professors at Dartmouth?
I am an alumnus and this is what we all received from the President’s office on November 15 (not sure I feel reassured, tbh):
To the Dartmouth community,
I am writing to let you know that a lawsuit was filed today against Dartmouth by former and current students. The suit follows the departures this past summer of three faculty members in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences (PBS) whose misconduct I have communicated with you about previously.
I would like to reiterate that sexual misconduct and harassment have no place at Dartmouth. We applaud the courage displayed by members of our community within PBS who brought the misconduct allegations to Dartmouth’s attention last year. And we remain open to a fair resolution of the students’ claims through an alternative to the court process.
However, we respectfully, but strongly, disagree with the characterizations of Dartmouth’s actions in the complaint and will respond through our own court filings. As a result of the misconduct we found earlier this year by the three PBS faculty members, we took unprecedented steps toward revoking their tenure and terminating their employment. They are no longer at Dartmouth and remain banned from our campus and from attending all Dartmouth-sponsored events, no matter where the events are held.
We conducted a rigorous, thorough and fair review of the allegations, consisting of three separate investigations conducted by an experienced external investigator who interviewed more than 50 witnesses and reviewed extensive documentation. Throughout this disciplinary process, we took steps to protect the privacy and procedural rights of all the parties involved.
I know I speak for the board of trustees and Dartmouth’s senior leadership when I say that we are dedicated to maintaining a safe and inclusive campus for all members of our community.
Dartmouth offers a range of support services to all, including those who have made reports of sexual assault and misconduct or would like to make reports. The services can be found on Dartmouth’s sexual respect website at http://dartgo.org/sexualrespect. Please do not hesitate to seek help.
Early this year, we convened the Presidential Steering Committee on Sexual Misconduct to review institution-wide policies and procedures on sexual misconduct response, prevention, education and accountability. As part of this ongoing process, we are now gathering campus-wide input on a new unified policy and mandatory comprehensive training plan.
At Dartmouth, we remain committed to improving our culture as we work to make our community the best it can be.
Sincerely,
Philip J. Hanlon ’77
President
So what should we all expect for our alumni interviews?
Also, should we mention the scandal with our interviewer?
Good question @SirStencil. My son’s interview is tomorrow, not sure how to handle it.
Also, just got a reply to a follow-up email about my interview (just to make sure we were still on, they said they were fairly sure, just wanted to check) and they said that they planned on us talking for about half an hour. That kinda stood out since everyone in the past has had over and hour long conversations or at the shortest, 45 minutes. Has anyone else heard about the alumni cutting down interview times?
@SirStencil My interviewer said the same thing – we ended up talking for an hour and a half. I think the planned time is about 30 minutes, but honestly if things are going well, plan for it to take much longer.
To help out other applicants. Today my son’s interview lasted 1 hour 45 minutes. With a woman who, from a distance, had zero in common. Polar opposites. But he felt it was very positive.
