Dartmouth/Brown/Williams/etc transfer hopeful. Any advice will be helpful.

Hey everyone,

I am currently a freshman as UCLA and would like to transfer for many reasons, but mainly size and location. To be completely honest, I was extremely stupid and naive during the college application process. I read fiske and applied to whatever school that sounded good, completely disregarding the main factors of size, location, etc. I have changed so much since the application process and feel that I would probably portray a different person (same personality, different goals). How would this affect admission to schools I applied to previously?

Here are some stats:

HS:
3.8 UW, 4.1W GPA
Rank: 11/337
SAT: 1930 Composite, 710 Math II, 680 Chem
Main EC's: Volunteering, Debate, ASB (lots of leadership positions)

College:
Current Schedule - Logic (4 units), German 1 (4 units), English Comp 3 (5 units), Existentialism Seminar (1 unit)
Projected GPA for Fall Quarter: 3.75+ (I have 100% in my logic class, a 94 in German, and I can keep submitting paper revisions until I get A's on all my final papers)
EC's: Work (14 hr/wk), Club Lacrosse (6 hr/wk)

So, I would like to continue debate and have tried contacting the team, but their emails/links seem to be down. Also, the student government application deadline has passed (I was too busy adjusting to school the first 2 weeks). So if I am unable to continue the same EC's I was doing in high school, would that be detrimental?

I would like to retake the SAT I, but there is no way I am missing the UCLA/USC game, so I think I will study for the ACT, which I have a feeling I might do better on. Also, I will be retaking the SAT II's, but this time probably with world history.

My list of schools so far: Dartmouth, Brown, Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin
I want to double major in philosophy and economics.

Any tips or suggestions? I apologize for the extremely long and messy post.

As much as your reasons for wanting to transfer are solid, your school lists seems to be aiming way too high. The highest transfer acceptance rate among the schools you listed is less than 12% (Dartmouth). Additionally, it seems kind of odd that Williams is a very tiny LAC in a rural area and Brown is a medium/large school in a city...Lots and lots of good luck...but I'd suggest selecting a few schools that were easier to transfer into and were also perfectly suited to your desires!!

i agree, the list of schools you selected are random and too hard to get into.

Thanks for the responses. I hate to add this little bit of information since I will probably get flamed, but I don't mind applying to only selective schools. I want to go into consulting and feel that "transferring up" is the only way to go. I am still open to any suggestions though :)

Now I am not miserable at UCLA, things are working out and I am having an ok time, but I am not loving it. If I end up having to stay here for four years, Im sure I'll be fine, but right now, I regret not "experiencing something new." I live 45 minutes away from UCLA and its just not what I want.

So, now that I am figuring out my list of schools, I would like some help and suggestions on where to apply. Like I said above, selectivity is not an issue for me, I am willing to take chances and sacrifice the application fee.

Size: Small to Medium... although I'd prefer something on the smaller side including LAC's. Right now, I feel like anything that is significantly smaller than UCLA will be good.
Location: I don't really know how to answer this, but I hate being smack dab in the middle of a city. I want a lot of campus life and community. And after reading about dartmouth and seeing pictures, a lot of nature would be a great plus!
Majors: Economics and Philosophy
Career Goal: As of now I want to go into consulting, but it's not set in stone yet because I am still researching (I have read some vault guides, read around the mba forum, looked at example cases)

If anyone needs clarification just let me know.

Schools I am looking at:
Dartmouth, Brown, Amherst, Williams, Haverford, Bowdoin, Stanford, Middlebury (I am definitely scared to apply here)

bump.......

What are you really asking? Do you have a shot at these schools? Of course, with a 3.75 from UCLA. Are these schools all very competitive to get into? Yes.

What do you really expect to glean?

I am mainly asking if there are any other schools I should be looking at or if there is anything else i can do to boost my chances.
