1) They accept the same amount they’ve been accepting for the past few years, which would mean a higher % technically, because of the smaller applicant pol

2) They defer more people because of the small pool. They want to have more flexibility in their selection so deferring people to the RD pool would allow this.

3) They accept more applicants than usual, because such a big decline in ED apps could mean a decline in RD as well, not just ED.

In terms of flat out rejections, I think that should stay about the same.

Yeah, I agree. Unfortunately, I feel that the 2nd option might be a more realistic one because they aren’t required to admit the same % of applicants each year so if they don’t like the ED pool then they can just defer kids to the RD pool to see if that one is better.

People keep suggesting that it could be due to the publicity surrounding the hazing scandal… I understand that, but I don’t think something like that would cause a 12% decrease, especially at a school as prestigious as Dartmouth.

So lol I guess I don’t know why there would be such a drop!

Based on that remark it would seem as if she’s saying that the ED pool is just as or slightly more qualified as last years’ pool. Idk, my gut feeling tells me the actual acceptances would be about similar, plus or minus a few, but maybe more defers than usual. Because of the significant decrease in ED probably related to Lohse, I think they’ll be worried about how many will actually apply for RD, and thus keep a lot of borderline applicants in handy. Though that would be a terrible thing to do to those applicants :(

It might also be because Princeton and other ivies brought back the options of early applications. Maybe that along many other things…

Haha maybe they’ll be so worried about a significant drop in RD that they will fill more of the class with the ED pool! Haha but that’s just hopeful thinking :)

I’m not sure what exactly my safety would be (I’m an int’l applicant), but the lowest I’m applying to are Tufts among universities and Bryn Mawr among LACs. I’m also applying to UC Berkeley and USC, in fact I’m about to submit my applications right now. I didn’t finalize the other schools I’m applying to yet, but I should apply to at least fifteen.

One of the reasons I chose Dartmouth is for its size!
Harvey Mudd is also a top choice, but it may be an little too small… 700 students is pretty crazy!
