Wow, everyone is saying some great stuff about handling decisions. I’m just thinking I’ll be so upset if my letter start with “After careful consideration.”

I might go crazy and punch something

…but I’ll probably just lie in bed for a day or two

@careld that was an awesome post! made me proud of applying regardless of the outcome :)

@careld Now that’s the attitude to have! If only I could follow that through

Parent of a D14 here. I just wanted to wish all of you good luck this Thursday. As background, my D also applied ED, and she got deferred, so I can relate to your anxiety. She was very upset, as Dartmouth was by far her #1 choice. However, she had tons of apps to get out, so there was no time to mope. It’s hard ED, as you haven’t had a chance to hear back from other schools yet. By the time April 1 rolled around (or I think late March her year), she had been accepted to many wonderful colleges. It does make it a bit easier to view decisions. As luck would have it, she got in during the regular round! It was still her #1 choice, and she is a very happy junior today. Whatever happens, rest assured that you will have many great choices, and don’t lose all hope if you get deferred. Good luck to all of you!

Thank you dumbo11 It’s nice to know that someone who was waitlisted still got accepted… gives us all hope, just in case!

Anyone know how helpful legacy is for admission? I consider myself a strong applicant. I have a 2250 SAT and two 800s and a 770 on my subject tests so even if I wasn’t, I’d still be considered. I also have decent extracurriculars.

Mainly, what I’m asking is will the fact that my mom’s a former Dartmouth student have any positive effect?

Well my grandfather attended Dartmouth but I asked specifically on the online chat and they said that legacy isn’t that important… idk. I know that a parent would hold more sway though. How does Dartmouth consider legacy though, if they don’t ask for it on their supplement?

They can see the colleges your parents attended from the common app. Plus my mother got a letter saying that they know I applied with legacy.

Oh so then a grandfather wouldn’t count? :(

They’ll see if your parents attended the school if you completed the section on the Demographics section that asks where your parents attended college.

You might find this Dartblog post heartening:

This is getting me so excited just reading it!

It seems good news for just plain ole’ ED applicants too ;)

Do you guys know about how many people that get deferred end up getting in RD or through the wait list?

Well, I’m not a legacy applicant so that doesn’t really help me :/

Defer admit rates are 5-10% and waitlist admit rates are anywhere from 1-10% (but usually on the lower end of the spectrum)

Late response as always: I applied to Dartmouth solely for its community and liberal arts. Academics was actually not important to me at all.

@magentaturtle, Well it says that the number of ED admits have been on the rise as well. Let’s hope that trend will continue this year!
