***Dartmouth Class of 2020 RD Applicant Thread***

in boys

accepted!!
waitlisted at cornell, penn, brown, and yale
rejected from columbia, harvard, and princeton

Accepted!!! I am in shock. My test scores/gpa were definitely on the lower end

Accepted!

Waitlisted. LOL. I dunno what to say to this school. Not accepting a place on the waitlist because it should go to someone who actually wants to go there.
Got into Yale so bye bye hunni.
Congrats to everyone who got in!

so how do i beg to get off waitlist lmfao

I really want to visit but I don’t think I can afford the plane ticket : ( Does Dartmouth offer travel assistance?

Holy crap, I was accepted even though I was a major delinquent throughout my high school career.

@CCSenioritis I’m going to contact them to check because I’m from Hawai’i so flights are really expensive and I need to visit since I’ve never been to the east coast.

Was accepted but Stanny is the place for me lol

I was accepted!!

If you don’t mind maybe you could help me understand…I’m a cynical social worker with an additional JD who has always worked with social problems. As a Mom I really paid no attention to my eldest (I have three) daughters college apps. Until she desired ivy. Above all else I want my children to be self sufficient.

When I looked at her stats I thought outside shot so yeah I’ll encourage… 4.5 weighted , ten AP, 2090 SAT, excellent writer, 3rd degree black belt student and teacher jujitsu (10 yrs), NHS, Delaware Aerospace counselor teaching kids rocketry (6 yrs). Volunteer at DASEF and tutor.

She was denied brown dartmouth penn harvard princeton georvetown. Given five interviews all exceptional — especially Dartmouth. She has always been a driven articulate warm person people connect with. I knew Sats were lower 25th but I can’t help focus on her being white middle class sincere sunk her boat. And she did everything herself. I am the least helicopter parent youll find. In fact I think college is overrated in some cases. She should have what…played up her parents divorce, two relatives dying of cancer, or her fathers blue collar backbreaking trade???

She is fine. She got into two safeties and waitlisted to Boston. I am not. I think ivies should just advertise their quotas…as in our 6 percent this year will be comprise of this many legacies, this many urm, this many first generations. …Holistic process. I will regret encouraging her. Yet she says “Fail u re in disguise is opportunity.” This kid was born loving learning and now she’s gonna be bored at times at a.state school.

@Cynicalsw: You can research the common date set and find that information for yourself. Your daughter’s test scores were low for Ivies. It sounds as though she has the more healthy view of things.

Data. Yes. And I did not place in many more achievements etc. You are aware I am viewing ivy acceptances with even lower SATS — and somebody flat out saying they were a delinquent in HS.

If her view were healthier why the reach? I appreciate your answer but was hoping to hear from someone with a similar experience. Actually about a half hour after posted i tried to delete. Archived forever.

@Cynicalsw Ivies are not easy for anyone, and everything is considered, including what opportunities they had and what they can add to the school. While legacies seem to take up a lot of spots (although at Dartmouth I believe it was only around 10%), a lot of those legacies have the necessary credentials. The boost is not necessarily stealing spots from everyone else. If she is happy, then there is no need to be so angry. Please do not spread hatred onto this online forum, and please do not mock the people who have hardships and were accepted because they shared them.

@CCSenioritis I received financial aid to cover my tuition at the college, and on Friday I was sent an email about them giving me assistance to go to Dimensions. If you don’t have that as a part of your package, I’m sure you can call them and ask.

@Cynicalsw the student you mentioned as saying they were a delinquent is anything but one. If you were to click on her profile you would see her SAT was 2300, her ACT 35, she helped raise $130,000 for Syrian refugees and she was a National Merit semifinalist. In her mind perhaps she did feel she slacked in high school, perhaps she compares herself to others that accomplished much more, perhaps being 17 or 18 that’s how she chooses to express her surprised excitement at beating the odds and getting in. Who knows?
Getting into any of the Ivies is a lottery. When there are 30,000 applicants and only 2,000 are given entrance that is thousands of well qualified and deserving students that have been told no. Why are any of them chosen? My daughter is a '19 at Dartmouth who is still astonished that she was accepted. Today as we were looking over the posts from the new '20s and those that were rejected and she repeated “Why did they let me in?” She is white and middle class,no “hooks” of any kind. Test scores? ACT was fabulous, SAT subject tests dismal. No sports, hasn’t authored a book and didn’t hold 5 different leadership positions in high school. Her alum interview? It was an afterthought. The interviewer rang us 3 days before the interview report was due back to Dartmouth. Apologised for contacting her so late said my daughter had slipped through the cracks and everyone thought someone else was speaking with her. I would say that interview had slim to no impact on her acceptance.
If you were to look at my daughter’s stats, while excellent, they without a doubt pale in comparison to some of the students on this website. As I said she continues to wonder how she was so fortunate to get in. The only answer I have is that when Dartmouth says holistic they mean it. Something came through to them in her application and essays that made them believe her to be an important component of the Class of 2019. Something stood out that wasn’t about test scores, or volunteer hours or launching a company at the ripe old age of 16.
I don’t know that anyone can give you the concrete answers you are looking for as to why your daughter was denied at some of the top tier schools. Your hurt and frustration on her behalf is understandable. It sounds though as if she is looking forward to her future at one of the schools that did accept her and that is wonderful, strong mind set that will serve her well

They’re paying for my flight!!! I’m going during the 12-13 for the 1st Dimensions of Dartmouth day! Wbu guys @coolestnerdever @sdomingo16

@CCSenioritis congratulations! My daughter is signed up to host during the dorm overnights during Dimensions and is looking forward to meeting the 20s. She loves it at Dartmouth, enjoy your visit

@saffysmum Thank you! I can’t wait to visit and check it out. My interest in Dartmouth has been increasing really fast these past 3 days hahahah
