Requested interview for Dartmouth but haven’t gotten one :(. Haven’t gotten interviews for any college I applied to, even though I requested…
I have my alum interview next Wednesday! Does having an interview mean that they liked my application or anything or does is it just random and it doesn’t mean anything if I got an interview?
I haven’t gotten mine either however, it is apart of your application
No one who applied RD from my school has received interviews yet. I’m just waiting it out. We’re from a small area but there are alumni around so idk. There’s still time.
I’m an interviewer and I still haven’t received my assignments yet. At least in our area we seem to be running behind.
I just got my Alumni Interview Meeting Email. I’m from Ohio.
@18YearsASlav Thank you so much! I had my interview few days ago and it went okay. My interviewer also asked me to prepare some of my stories and that was what we mainly talked about so that’s really useful! Good luck to those whose interviews are coming up!
S had his interview two days ago. Said it went very well. Overall about 45 minutes. Comfortable setting, casual conversation. Good luck to all of you!
I had my interview four days ago, and it went very well! We talked a little over an hour. Good luck to everyone else with upcoming interviews!
I had my interview a couple weeks ago and it went it was great!! It was super causal and was just like a conversation, and it lasted about an hour. Good luck to everyone with interviews soon I’m sure they will be great!!
I have my interview next Tuesday at my local library. All of my interviewers so far have been so impressive and successful. The dude who’s interviewing me majored biochemistry & molecular biology at Dartmouth and graduated with a PhD and MD from Dartmouth. Dang.
@sciencenerd123 They’ll have a lot of stories to tell about Dartmouth, then!
I still haven’t heard about an interview. Getting kinda discouraged but I do live in a fairly rural area so it’s no biggie.
@frazzledazzle I applied EDII to Tufts and I haven’t received an interview either. Kinda upsetting, but it’s OK. Don’t worry about it! It doesn’t have much of an impact on their decision anyway plus you won’t get penalized for not having one because it’s not your fault.
I am also an alumni interviewer (not this year as I have a student applying so I had to recuse myself). To everyone worried about getting an interview - it really is a random assignment. If your best friend gets one and you don’t, it was just the luck of the draw.
They ask the alums that sign up to be interviewers (not everyone does, so if you have alums in your area, it doesn’t necessarily mean any of them do interviews) how many students they are willing to interview each year and then just randomly assign students within their local high schools.
Also, the interview does not usually have much bearing on your application. Only in the rarest circumstances would it merit a second review of your app - if the interviewer gave you the highest ranking and the committee had you down for a rejection or the opposite where your interviewer gave you the lowest ranking and the committee had you down for an acceptance. Even in those cases, it might not trigger a second review. It would depend on what the interviewer had to say.
I will give you an awesome example to hopefully bring a smile to your faces. Way back in the olden days, I was also a Senior Interviewer (seniors hired by the Admissions Office to do on campus interviews in the summer and fall). We went through a lot of training on how to interview, how to do write-ups, and even did a mock admissions committee where they gave us applications from the previous year to review and we as a committee had to decide which kids to accept, reject, and waitlist. We did not come up with the same outcomes as the actual committee had the year before which showed us how random admissions can really be.
So here’s the story - during my first shadow interview where I sat in on a current admissions officer’s interview with a prospective student, the first question the AO asked was what the student was looking forward to senior year. The student replied that they were looking forward to “ringing the underclassmen.” We had no idea what that was, so she asked him what he meant. He said it was when the seniors turned their class rings toward their palms, surrounded a freshman, and hit them over the head with the heavy part of the rings. Yup. Not exactly the story you want to tell your AO during your interview. Wanting to give the kid a seond chance, she asked if there was anything ELSE he was looking forward to. His response? Cutting in the lunch line. LOL.
The rest of his interview was actually fine and he had somewhat thoughtful answers so we determined he wasn’t just trying to tank the interview. However, the AO wrote on the top of the write-up: DO NOT ADMIT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. So, there are rare cases where your interview can really mess up your app.
I had a couple more kids like that (one couldn’t think of a single book he had actually finished in the past year) while a Senior Interviewer, but mostly we would come out of our interviews thinking, how in the world did I get in when kids like this are out there?! There were some I just wanted to say, “Here, take my place. You deserve to be here much more than I do.”
It will all work out and you’ll be super happy where you end up. Just don’t talk about beating up younger kids in your admissions interviews and you will be fine!
The college announced today that applications for Class of 2022 totaled 22,005. This is a 9.8% increase over last year.
Acceptance rate will surely dip under 10%. Dartmouth is not alone. It seems that all these selective colleges are seeing large increases in applications. I wonder why?
- Higher education is doing a better job at marketing thereby drawing more interest to their individual institutions.
- Kids are applying to more schools than they used to. It’s easy with the Common App.
- More students are applying including more international students, low-income (amazing financial aid), and first-generation students.
- Everyone wants what is rare.
Finally got an interview- this weekend! I know it doesn’t have too much bearing on the decision, but does anyone have any advice for me? I guess your typical “tell-me-about-yourself” sort of interview questions?
I found my interview for Dartmouth to be much more stiff than my other interviews. Maybe it was just my interviewer, but it wasn’t much of a conversation. He came with a paper with a list of questions and made notes of my answers. While I appreciate that he was prepared, it was a bit uncomfortable for me.
Lol I was supposed to have my interview yesterday but I waited an hour and my interviewer didn’t show up–turns out he had the wrong date in his calendar! Of course that would happen to me :)). BUT judging from the interviews that I did have, it’s super casual and you should be fine. Know how to talk about yourself, your ECs, intended major, why you want to go to Dartmouth, stuff like that. Interviews aren’t bad at all.
As an interviewer, I just want to caution to please not judge a college too much on the basis of one individual @sciencenerd123 , that kind of stinks… I hope he will reschedule based on your availability. @ski_racer, that clearly sounds like someone who’s inexperienced and not used to interviewing people. We’re all volunteers, and we all come from different professions and have different strengths and weaknesses. I’m someone who frequently interviews people professionally and have done Dartmouth interviewing for years, so it’s completely comfortable to me, and I hope to the student as well. Just try to see it as an opportunity to learn more about the college and otherwise understand that there’s very little weight given to the interview in the admissions process.
