No first class seats. They ship a pet crate to your house and have a local alum send you as freight. Good luck to all of you. I hope you all make it to Hanover and have a wonderful time!

Thanks! Have you done the program before?

I had never heard of this program prior to todayā¦ how did you guys find out about it? I donāt think I have seen any threads on this here on CC until today. It looks like a great program. Do other Ivies offer this type of program? I know that LACās doā¦

I called earlier and they said decisions by end of week. Over 800 applicants.

NewHavenCTmom, I at least found out about this program by Dartmouth themselves inviting me to apply through email. If you can find the application online, it lists the many ways that a student could have been notified of the program. None other Ivies offer this exact program, but Princeton offers the Summer Journalism Program which is also FREE but it only accepts 20 students. Basically, these are the only two FREE Ivy programs. The rest are quite expensive.

Hey NewHavenCTmom, is your child anticipating Yale because you do live in Connecticut? Iām applying to Yale myself.

LOL Its funny b/c most people here donāt see Yale as you guys see it(we pass through campus several times/week and its funny b/c we try to figure out what all the hoopla is all about! Princetons campus puts Yales to shame)

DD14 does not want to stay so close to home for college but I will encourage her to applyā¦ her school has 1 or 2 kids that get accepted each year. So we will see what happens.

Yes, I Googled the Dartmouth program earlierā¦ looks great! It went into her Junior Year folder. Yale has a summer journalism program as well thats free ā¦ but its a day programā¦ DD14 will do that program in August.

Oh, thatās great! You must be a happy mother. Iām proud of you and your daughter! Lets wish the best of luck for me and her when weāre applying to Yale senior year. I agree with you that Princeton definitely does have the better campus, the place looks like Hogwarts EVERYWHERE. But the one thing that Yale beats Princeton at is its cupcake truck. Its so hard to find on campus though :(

Jeesh! 800 applicants! That statistic is pretty daunting and unsurmountable. According to threads from the previous years, the program only garnered around 300 applicants or so. Nowā¦I know I didnāt get in.

Which cupcake truck??? There are severalā¦ one of which is SUGARā¦ they are a bakery one town over(in East Haven). And they won Cupcake Wars/Food Network in the fall of 2010. Then there is one called Charlie and the Cupcake Factoryā¦ this one is HORRRIBLEā¦ LOL

I think the one you are referring to is no longer running in New Haven. They opened up a cupcake shop in Bridgeport some time agoā¦ I never had them.

But the one that beats them all is a place that we found in NYC a few months back, its called 2 Little Red Hensā¦ Sugar was our all time faveā¦ but this place beats Sugar.

2 Little Red Hens is on 86th and 2ndā¦

And thank you for your kind words! She may or may not apply to Yaleā¦ we will seeā¦ its too close. We can roll out of bed and be there.

Youāre welcome! As a mother of a college-bound child, may I ask you a question with sincerity because I truly feel that you know much about colleges? If I get accepted to both Yale and Princeton, at least, which one should I enroll in and which should I turn down? This has been so hard for me because they are both IMMEASURABLE schools and I honestly donāt want the doubt when I could have easily received the benefit. Also, may you state the reason(s) for picking the school you chose for me? Thanks in advance!

Itās okay, sweetiegirl! If you canāt survive through 800 applicants, then how in the world will you survive that unkind college application process with 20,000+ who are equivalent to you?

You guys, please forgive me if I am not responding quick enough because my computer keeps logging me off for some strange reason! Has anyone received a decision yet, since Dartmouth chose to send them out separately?

@Chris

Wow thats a heavy question. I guess you will have to decide where you will be the happiest. I know Yale is held in high regard all over the world, but I am not phased by itā¦ as I said, one of our main streets here in New Haven runs right through campus(so many do for that matter) and so its a part of our cityā¦ its MEHā¦ I know some will think I am nuts but I thought Princeton had a specialness about it. What? you might ask? I donāt know.

I guess you will have to look to see if you would like the dinner/dining clubs that Princeton offers, do they offer your major? Which will cost more to attend? So many different factors to sort outā¦Pton- Its very preppy/rich from what I could seeā¦ but I did like the fact that they had invited John Carlos to the campus for a speaking engagement and the posters were displayed all over campusā¦ boy did I want to snatch one of those posters! LOL And a campus that will invite such a figure to its campus is ok in my book. Yale isā¦ Yale.

A family that my oldest son went to school with has a son a Ptonā¦ and a sister who graduated from Columbia. She says her brother loves Pton! He is URM, not sure of the socioeconomic status as they are a 2 parent/double income/highly degreed familyā¦

Thatās amazing! Youāre the bomb! After reading, what you said I would definitely choose Princeton because of the atmosphere, students, food, excitement, and campus, THAT AMAZING HOGWARTS CAMPUS! I never get tired of seeing pictures of Princetonās campus. Thanks once again

800?!! Now I wish I hadnāt done my application at the last second. My essays were duuuuuuuuumb. Well, good luck to you guys. Iām going to take a nap now. :/

Let me be clear. Acceptance into this program is great, as it shows youāre a student of Dartmouth (and comparable institutionās) caliber. That said, this wonāt work towards your app the same way other activities that got you into the program will. Itās simply an indicator of success to come. The only caveat was that you guys look into doing other things during the summer, for if you are applying to schools that ask you how you spent your June to August, saying all you did was going to a short - though prestigious - summer program at Dartmouth College wonāt be nearly as compelling as what some other kids do during their summer holidays.

Yes, you can be confident that youāll get into a good school if you get into this program, but there are myriad of kids in similar positions as you, and far fewer spots in the incoming class for the taking. If you donāt get in, so be it. Maybe theyāll look favorably upon you next year, when it really matters. If you do, donāt let hubris get the better of you.

Hey, Gratisfaction! Do you even like Dartmouth? Will you be applying there or to any Ivies because it seems that you really donāt care?

To answer your questions: Yes, I do like Dartmouth. I have visited the campus, and on a totally cursory level, itās the best Ivy. Itās once you scratch that you realize what is wrong with the school. Isnāt that always the case, though? I still like and appreciate the school, and am provisionally considering applying early decision next year. So short answer: Yes, I do like Dartmouth.

Iām not sure what you mean by asking if āI really careā. Iām posting on College Confidential, a forum infamous for its overly ambitious, type-A student posters. Doesnāt this fact speak for itself? Guess notā¦ lulz
