Also, if you guys don’t mind me asking, which essays did you choose and what did you write about?
We don’t even have an article detailing the yield rate of the 2022 class like they did back in 2017, can’t even speculate. Dartmouth, please throw us a bone! I’m sure we’re all refreshing our email 30 times a day at this point.
I chose the one about intellectual curiosity just because I’m always working on my math and doing research.
@justsnooping YES! I’ve seriously considered emailing The Dartmouth to ask them to write one!! Usually if they write one it comes out right around decisions, so if we ever get one that could be the harbinger that we truly are close.
@IndirectProofs nice! That was probably a pretty powerful choice, a lot of their marketing lately has been around the intellectual curiosity of Dartmouth, so that essay prompt was probably the one that resonated very deeply this year.
I chose “From songs and film to formulae and computer code, human expression and discovery take many forms. How do you express your creativity? What ideas or values do you explore and celebrate when your imagination wanders?” because I spend a lot of my time painting, writing, recording and performing music, making film, doing photography, etc. I ended up writing my whole essay through like 20 haikus!
@ratgrrrl that’s heckin creative, wow!!
I chose: “During the 2016 Olympic Games, American runner Abbey D’Agostino ’14 collided with another athlete in the first round of the 5,000-meter event. Both fell to the track. Although injured, Abbey’s first instinct was to help the other fallen athlete so they could continue the race together. Their selflessness was widely praised as the embodiment of the Olympic ideal of sportsmanship. Share a moment when kindness guided your actions.”
anyone else choose this one?
I chose: “In Love Medicine, author Louise Erdrich ’76 writes, ‘Society is like this card game here, cousin. We got dealt our hand before we were even born, and as we grow we have to play as best as we can.’ Describe your ‘hand’ and reflect on how you have played it.”
I talked about two particularly difficult “cards” I was dealt and how that adversity helped me grow, especially since my situation is kind of unusual. I tried to focus on how it would help shape my future contributions to the Dartmouth community. But all of your guys’ essays seem so strong omg I’m nervous (moreso than before haha). I just wish they could end all the waiting now
I also chose the “In Love Medicine, author Louise Erdrich ’76 writes, ‘Society is like this card game here, cousin. We got dealt our hand before we were even born, and as we grow we have to play as best as we can.’ Describe your ‘hand’ and reflect on how you have played it.” prompt. I talked about growing up with a crazy medical history and rejecting my body under the societal norm of what constitutes “beauty”. It was really personal but I’m nervous that it didn’t bring enough of Dartmouth into it because I kept it mostly focused on me
I also chose the “In Love Medicine…” prompt. I didn’t mention Dartmouth at all, oops to be fair though, they only gave us 300 words for what was essentially a prompt about our life story.
I wrote about how I go out to these restaurants alone so I can work on my math. I’ve been doing this for so long. I work from home, so I go out quite frequently to get out of the house. Anyways, I explained how people constantly ask me if I’m doing homework, and it’s hard to explain to them that I do math because I have a passion for solving problems, and trying to explain what it is to be a mathematician is hard. Everyone thinks of it as a school subject, but it’s so much more than that to me. Then I went on to tell my story about how a historical note in the margin of a math textbook inspired me years ago, and how it changed my view of what mathematics was, and how it inspired me.
So at least if they reject me, they have a clear picture of who I am and what I do.
Lol, oh man. I also chose the "In Love Medicine…"prompt. I didn’t really mention Dartmouth, though. I saved that mainly for the why transfer and why Dartmouth essays
I feel special since no one did my prompt LOL. But no worries guys, I didnt mention Dartmouth either. They don’t want you to mope about Dartmouth. They want to get to know YOU. The advice Dartmouth gave me was to be very personal.
this wait is making me sad for some reason
On a positive note: has anyone in this thread gotten in to other schools yet? I’m in at Conn Coll, Skidmore, and Kenyon. I’d love to go to Dartmouth and it really is my top choice and continues to be, but at least I still have a place somewhere else that I like :~)!
@ratgrrrl Congrats! UCLA for me!
I’m not sure when decisions are being released but I’m withdrawing my application today as I’ve just committed to Princeton. I have no idea if it helps or not, but hopefully it’ll give some butterfly effect thing and give someone a boost up lol. I can wish, right?
I feel it’d be unfair to have my application flying around these colleges when I know I’ll be attending elsewhere. You guys have been so amazing, @IndirectProofs , seriously, I’m your number 1 fan, I’m rooting SO MUCH for you. You truly deserve the best. I’ll be watching from the sidelines. Good luck everyone, thank you for sticking together in this journey!
@AGoodFloridian I wish you the best in your future, thank you for making it easier for us :))
@AGoodFloridian thank you so much for rooting for me. You have been a HUGE inspiration to me, and I was so happy that you got into Princeton! Your words of encouragement mean a lot to me.
