Dartmouth Dormroom on my christmas list...

Hey, if you want to read up on dorms a little more there was a thread about it a while back...http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=7503&page=1. I'm personally very partial to the fayerweathers (I live there and love it), but I think one of the most important aspects of the dorm is the group of kids who is put there. That obviously changes from year to year, so it's hard to know what dorms will be really fun when you come. They're really all pretty nice room-wise; a lot of the mixed class dorms have half baths and very big rooms. As for the housing form, I think it's pretty much a crapshoot, but I know if you ask for a smoking dorm you'll have a good chance of getting put in wheeler and if you ask for substance free you have a better shot at russel sage (but you could just get put in a substance-free section of the river).

Hey Athena,

I think they need to get on your good side since you will be working in housing for the 09's over the summer ;) :)

I prefer cash, no credit cards. ;)

lol

I just went to a Dartmouth holiday social in nj and The Aires acapella group played and they were AMAZING! I had so much fun....I can't wait to get to campus!

about eng 5 being easy: it ain't exactly an easy grade.... Eng 5 is pretty much a guarenteed B. I don't think theres much way around it.

Aw c'mon, you don't know anyone who's gotten an A in the class? Some people I know said it was not that hard...

yah, I got an A- this term in it...it was an extremely time consuming and difficult class, and I'm really happy with an A-.

Does Dartmouth pay for airfare for Dimensions?

If you got in ED you will most likely not be invited to dimensions, as it is for RD students to help them "chose Dartmouth". If you decide to go (which you should try as it is a great way to meet your prospective classmates) on your own they you will have to pay. In addition you will have ot find someone who can put you up and pay for your own meals.

Apppro, who did you take English 5 with? (I hear Grantham is pretty unpopular...) What's the hardest part? English is usually one of my better subjects and I'm a little worried... what was the class like?

Well I've talked about it with a few people... some profs tell everyone in the class outright that they are going to get a B if they show up to class and hand in things on time... They have a chance at getting an A but generally only 1 or 2 per class (which are all 16-18 students) well get them.

I disagree with dartmyth. I don't think English classes are always that difficult, I think they take a tremendous amount of time. I would say my average amount of outside class time on English alone was roughly 17-25 hours per week. This was reading a book in three days or less and then writing a paper that was generally around 8 pages. These, of course, are not just 8 pages. They are pages you learn to scrutinize over for hours and hours, making sure you don't use "is" "was" "were" or any other "to be" verb, among making other errors. You think it's perfect...only so you can get a B- on it. The first paper I gave her (I thought it was very good at the time) received a B-/C+.

I have heard about Grantham, yes- she's supposed to be tough, but I can't give you any advice on her as I didn't have her. I will say that I knew all the things said about her before I even requested my top four choices, and her two sections were my choices #2 and #3....I thought she seemed very interesting.

I had Professor Priscilla Sears. She was phenomenal. Our class was focused on gender roles, but we also talked about race in society and class distinction. I found it to be a very interesting class. I picked Sears because she was the only professor without any negative comments on the SA board- and I don't have a negative comment for her. I really really recommend her!

oh, and btw- take it from me....your 800 SATII writing score or 800 verbal doesn't mean anything....high school was easy, this is....real.

On another note, I Just remembered that my friend who was in a different Eng 5 than me this term told me today he also got an A- in the class....so it does happen. I think A's probably happen quite often, though I know I wouldn't have gotten a higher grade by putting in more work. I don't think I've ever worked harder in a class in my life.

One of my daughter's friends had Grantham this fall, and while it is a lot of work, they said she is an amazing professor. Daughter's comments were that Grantham is not popular with a lot of conservatives because of her liberal point of view and concentrates on large variety of women and multicultural writers..

She also wanted Sears this term (winter) but wants to keep the MWF schedule and Sears is teaching tuesday/thursday.

I can tell you for a fact that math 8 was not an easy "A" course, because she said people were dropping like flies from these courses and there were a lot of people on her floor lamenting, the average on the first midterm was an 68.

It is definitely not H.S. As I stated in a previous thread, daughter had history class with 200 pages of reading per night, a quiz and a paper due every class.

I told my daughter your comments, on just showing up and getting a B and she said that she hopes to have some of those classes soon, but she hasn't come across them yet.

So, does that mean that Dartmouth does pay for airfare for admitted RD students? That would be... phenomenal.

Edit: To Dimensions, that is.

I had Professor Zeiger. She was nice, the work wasn't too challenging. Some of her theories were a little out there... but the readings were generally interesting.

I don't think that there are any "free rides" to Dimensions. If you have to fly in they will probably get you a discounted rate or you may have to pay something because the school does nto want to lay out the cost of a ticket and at the last minute you do not come. At Dimensions, they will pay for your food, and will put you up. You will only need money to purchase incidentals.

We live in NYC, so Dartmouth had a bus for students from NY/NJ and CT, but they still had to pay to take the bus.
