Dartmouth Early Decision 2016 Official Thread

Had my interview today. The interview went well I think. My interviewer and I connected on numerous points, Including our major (intended), job (lawyer), favorite book, key club president, ASB president, etc. Good time!

I’m glad it went well, tylrrvera! My interviewer also had the same interests as me (Classics major). I like to think that Dartmouth purposely arranged it to make it more comfortable for us, but it might just be a coincidence.

Congrats on everyone’s successful interviews! I want to study neuroscience, and my interviewer studied engineering. Still, she was really awesome. Too bad interviews don’t count for much. :(

aww this makes me really sad i didnt get an interview. i was really looking forward to having one. is it too late now for someone to contact me, or should i just give up hope?

it’s not like i live in the boonies either haha i’m in north jersey right near hoboken lol

An alumna contacted me two days before my interview, which was Saturday, November 12th, because her write-up for Dartmouth was due November 18th. Sorry, boomroasted! :frowning: Don’t be too sad, though, they don’t count for much!

Is anyone else here waiting to also here about the Coca-Cola Scholarship results?

@toombs61,
I read that book too. Dartmouth might have changed the formula little bit, but it can’t be too much different from the formula quoted in the book. As stated in the book, colleges need to evaluate students from different schools with different courses. Only objective way is to look at tests since everyone takes them. Class rank is also considered. This whole AI is given 70% weightage which still leaves room for (another 30%) other activities such clubs, research, sports, essays etc. Different colleges may give different weightage, instead of 70%, some might give academics only 65% or 80%. But they can’t be too much off.

For athletic recruits, all Ivies must still calculate AI and it seems they can’t be far by more than 1 standard deviation from other admitted students. I read this some where.

I have a question on this calculation though. It says 1/3 is based on SAT subject tests, 1/3 is based on SAT (Math & Reading) and 1/3 is based on class rank& size. What happens to SAT writing, is that not included in AI calculation? I have taken 3 subject tests. I scored better in these subject tests than my writing. In this case my SAT writing would be taken as one subject or only the 3 subjects where I scored better than my writing while calculating AI? Does anyone know?

Does anyone know what % of ED applicants are athletic recruits and % of applicants who have other hooks (Legacy, URM, large donations etc). I am trying to figure out what is left for average Joes in ED after all these special quotas.

For athletics, Dartmouth may have at least 15 sports that would mean 30 teams (15 men & 15 women). Assuming average team size of about 15 each, that would be 30x15 which is 450 athlets in college. Assuming they are spread evenly across all 4 years, each year they need to recruit about 450/4 which is 113. So assuming 60% acceptance rate, this would mean around 190 applicants for this 112 seats. Is this seem reasonable? How many Legacies/URMs seats/applicants? I know it varies every year but average? Does anyone know? Acceptance rate for general Joes would be much lower after taking out Athletic & Legacies/URMs. I think many of URMs might apply RD rather than ED, but I could be wrong since. Most of the URMs will get Full Aid at most of the Ivies (assuming their family income is < 70k). Any thoughts?
Thanks

I don’t think that Dartmouth releases statistics on information such as that…Unless someone decides to make up some “guesstimates” based on other stats.

I’ve had my interview on the first week of November. I thought it was going to be slightly intimidating because I had two interviewers… The alumni interview coordinator for my state and my interviewer happened to work at the same law firm. I thought that it went really well, though. They both were super friendly and nice.

And the Dartmouth Aires were just awesome last night. I had some minor reservations somewhere in my heart about my ED application because Yale and Dartmouth were my two top choices and I wouldn’t be able to even apply to Yale if I were to get into Dartmouth early. And as I was watching the sing-off last night, such regrets were completely eliminated.

I love Dartmouth so much and I’m just a candidate. If I got lucky enough to get in, I wouldn’t know how to contain myself and not think about the prospect of going there all the time.

Dartmouth rulessss.

arcfromconn, in repsonse to question about whether or not the AI (or some similar system now in place at Dartmouth) takes into account the writing section of the SAT, I have no idea, although I assume that the current ranking system gives it some weight. All I know about the Dartmouth app reveiw system I read in the Herandez book, which still seems helpful but far from definitive in understanding the Dartmouth review process

Honestly, this thread is SOO boring! You would think that applicants to an ivy league school would at least be able to maintain some sort of interesting conversation…

I suggest we talk about something to make the time (22 days) pass even faster!

I just got invited to a local Dartmouth Club’s holiday luncheon. Here’s the catch: it’s the 10th of December, which is FIVE FREAKING DAYS before decisions are released. Since it’s so close to the 15th, I know I’m not being “rated” or anything, but still. What if decisions are released the 9th, and I’m rejected?! How awkward would THAT be?! Hi, nice to meet you, I was just rejected from your alma mater! I would just stay home, if that’s the case.

Gah. These 22 days could not be crawling by any slower.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving tomorrow! :)

so…what are everyone’s favorite movies…

The Breakfast Club, hands down.

Bruce Almighty.

Sleeper! Inception and Pride and Prejudice too.

Triple-tie between Jurassic Park, Mrs. Doubtfire, and LotR 1.

Little Miss Sunshine definately

Animal House (based on writer’s experiences at Dartmouth)
