Dartmouth ED Class of 2020

@clairecm98, I think your scores are fine, but it varies widely depending on the test you opt for.

For example, the Lit Exam is known to be difficult, and anything about a 700 demonstrates incredible competency. If you score above a 700 in any foreign language (provided it’s not your native one), you’re also very impressive, no matter the percentile.

My husband is an alum and does interviews. Approximately half of applicants get interviews and it does not affect admission. So, if you did not get one- don’t read too much into it.

Thanks for the insight, @oscar63. What’s the purpose of the interview then?

Ugh I applied ED but now I’m really turned off by the ‘black lives matter’ situation at Dartmouth :expressionless:

I really doubt that that’s going to affect life on campus significantly. If you’re really concerned, however, I think you can withdraw your application before the 15th and give that as a reason, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Dartmouth is a wonderful school (as I’m sure you’d agree), and the events of this past week hardly predict what your experience would be like there.

@gearsstudio What about the situation turns you off? POC at universities all over the country are tired of the racial inequalities they’ve been experiencing and they’re speaking out against it. If anything it would make me proud to see my potential classmates fighting for what they deserve.

@Gatortristan What inequality do you speak of? Elite colleges are already fine in the sense that racial inequality isn’t prevalent. In fact, minorities are often advantaged in admissions. Also, even if there is a slight amount of “inequality”, is disrupting others and being obnoxious really your idea of “speaking out”?

@gearsstudio I’m glad racism doesn’t exist anymore!

@Oberyn No meaningful amount of racism exists in elite American colleges.

@gearsstudio, even though I don’t condone the protesters’ alleged actions, I think you might be deluding yourself.

Quick question, do Dartmouth ED decisions come out earlier? Or is it going to be the 15th of December?

@simonbolivar I might be making a mistake but I think last year they released decisions on the Friday before the 15th.

Hi everyone! I applied ED to Dartmouth and I’ve been following this thread for a while and just made an account!
Does anybody know officially what date we should hear back about our decisions?
I saw in threads from previous years when people called admissions they got a more exact answer.

I think the situation turned off a lot of people, and rightfully so, when protesters decide to barge into libraries, disrupt students, shove people, allegedly pin someone to the wall, and shout expletives to students that are trying to study. I support people exercising their freedom of speech in contained ways, but I think the way it was carried out was ridiculous. In fact, I think there are grounds for arrest, based on what I have read and watched regarding the protest.

@cncincolor, Dartmouth claims they’ll notify us by December 15, but from what I’ve heard, decisions typically come out the Friday before (in this case, we’d check on the 11th)

@ALibertarian, I’m not sure as to what actually happened. What’s been alleged and what others have claimed happened (even those others say are victims) do not line up.

in post #122 @SirPepsi asked what’s the purpose of interviews since not all applicants can have them and they’re not penalized if that’s the case. True. And in the vast majority of cases, even the interviews that DO happen, don’t matter (since they are randomly assigned, the shoo-in is as likely or unlikely to be interviewed as the zero-chancer).

Most that do occur – won’t have any affect. Why? Most kids are clear rejects, a handful are clear accepts, and some are in the grey area (being considered). For the first two groups, the interviews are irrelevant (unless some huge red flag causes a “clear accept” to be questioned). The clear reject kid, no matter how he/she shines in the interview – is already DOA – no shining write up will resurrect the dead.

Thus, only the kids in the grey area — might a glowing or muted interview write up matter.

I’ve seen this assist two kids from a rough, inner-city high school in my area who had promising apps, who had caught the attn of the admissions committee — but they weren’t ready to vote yes/no due to the fact that the teacher recs weren’t stellar. They were positive but formulaic and spoke in banalities. As is often the case, some teachers simply don’t write LORs that top schools really can use. The committee waited for the alumni interview write ups. Both came back extremely positive – and it was enough to push the committee to offer admits to both kids. The write ups were the final justification needed to offer admits to these young men.

But this is very rare, as you can imagine.

My interview is in less than four hours - I’m nervous as can be! As no one is a shoo-in at Ivy League Institutions (and I’d hope I’m not an auto-reject), this could be influential. I’m gonna be myself and nail this thing xD

@SirPepsi Good luck with your interview. Please check back in and give us your impression of how it went.

Alright! It’s finished and was absolutely incredible.

My interviewer was also a Social Scientist at heart, and I felt we connected on several different things. The interview lasted approximately 90 minutes and was incredibly productive (I was told that I’m one of the best candidates with whom he’s spoken), and I learned a lot about Dartmouth and what it has to offer. I’m more convinced than ever that my ED choice was the right one.

Let’s hope I get in!

Anyone know how we will be notified of admissions decisions?? Is it through an email or do we get something in the mail? Thanks
