**Dartmouth International Applicant's Thread 2017**

@Blue
Haha, believe me, I’ll have to work like 5 times as much to get close to the top swimmers - I am relatively short, heavy, small hands and feet… only things working for me is my technique and overall muscle speed and strength :P

Nope, no Financial Aid here, was going to, but my dad just aid that it may affect my application - especially since we can afford it…

@Pomani
My times are terrible compared to yours…
These are my best, while I trained that is, taken from the 2010 Mauritian Swimming Nationals;
50m Free - 26.93
100m free - 1.00.23
200m free - 2.20.00
50 fly- 28.34
100m fly - 1.10.00
50 back - 30.00
100 back - 1.15.00
Best 3km open water (swum freestyle and a little fly xP) - about 40-42mins from memory?
*As I said… not the best, and over the past 2 years I haven’t been able to train as well as before… I have improved my 50m interval times from 42s per 45s interval to an average of around 35s for a 45s interval… still not good enough though :/

@Rishav
I don’t remember if I have for Dartmouth yet… I have for CalTech, UChicago and my safety though… I might get round to doing the one for Dartmouth (I also have a friend swimming for Dartmouth from my school… but he swum nationally in SA)

@Boss
I know right? I thought we’d have a couple koreans and chinese at least! (without being in danger of sounding even slightly politically incorrect) hahaha

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!

…“Lanterns UNITE!!!” xP 100 points to anyone who catches that corny reference

rishav17 - Haha. could be. Send me the link id watch it too :stuck_out_tongue:
Tournaments? Umm played for my state (3 years), and won a bunch of tournaments with my school (Most instate). Also got selected for a Soccer camp at an India club , but couldnt go (Parents couldnt afford) -_-
Wbu?

MRU93 - well we dont know the level of training facilities they have there. or how good they are. so its too early to say. Personally, I cant swim worth ****. :stuck_out_tongue: I wish i could. :P

Those 100 points would be mine, fellow Green Lantern! Isnt that supposed to be a part of the Blackest Night Storyline? :P

And I thought I was the only Green Lantern fan alive :open_mouth:
And the east asians are all too busy studying mahn! They dont have time for ‘stupid stuff’ like CC :P

@Blue
Maybe I might be the next Thorpe, Phelps, Neethling… but I still seriously doubt it! :stuck_out_tongue: Swimming would have to become my life… I’d probably be a better rower (or as one of my friends from school and gym buddy say… I should start doing power lifting since I have the right sort of build for it :expressionless: Not my scene)

And the 100 points definitely does go to you - though I don’t think it was a particularly hard reference :stuck_out_tongue: but I am not the biggest Green Lantern fan (I like the idea… but nowhere near a fanatic - ie I don’t even know the different storylines…). I still think Goku from Dragon Ball Z would be the most epic super hero… what other hero can toss mountains and survive been blown through mountains, stars, basically any matter in existence (there has to be an episode where he climbs out a black hole though xP)

HEY! I’ve seen loads of East Asians on CC… just all on MIT

UK here too!!!

Potential Major: English/Theatre/Geography… so, bascially undecided!!

Hobbies: Theatre / Music :’)

Glad to know there’s some other international students out there…

Good ol’ UK-ers :stuck_out_tongue:

got an interesting selection of majors there :slight_smile: what do you want to ultimately do with your degree? :)

And how are your A Levels going (assuming A Levels anyway :stuck_out_tongue: )? I’ve just got my results back :smiley: (we go along the Jan to Oct/Nov sessions). Hope its not too bad.

Good to have a new visitor! Welcome

@MRU93Raith - mate, those are some great 50 times, particularly the freestyle, anything under 27 undoubtedly gets my respect.

Yo I saw you were from SA, and I in fact have a large link with South African swimming! I train with the coach who used to coach Ryk Neethling when he was in his prime and went on to win gold in the 4 x 100m freestyle at the 2004 Olympics, in fact she coached the whole team. And I have Ryk’s sister on Facebook, Jean-Marie, who I met at a competition in Ireland. AND… I’ve met Chad le Clos in Dubai (Have him on FB also - just sayin’- haha) and I’ve met his Dad - quite a character.

@Po
Thanks bro, those once again are my best… not my current usual times. I’m fairly happy with my 50 free, but ultimately I’d like to get down to sub 25 for 50 free, sub 27 for 50 fly and sub 29 for 50 back… Just not really built for swimming :stuck_out_tongue: quite unfortunate.

I’ve actually been wanting to meet Ryk, Roland and their whole relay team! I have a few friends who have trained with Chad, but I haven’t had the chance to meet any of them. Apparently my water polo coach is friends with Ryk, and they trained together at my school for a while :stuck_out_tongue: He was joking about how Ryk can reach the other end of a 25m pool with the swimming elastics (more like bloody rubber bands though) with out much trouble - whereas my coach was pacing pacing a metre or so away from the edge and coldn’t reach out to grab it! LOL

@guyinblue – That is brilliant!! I got selected for district(U-17 at the age of 14). Sat through one match and we lost – end of tournament! :stuck_out_tongue:
Played for school(captained U-15), not much success( Though had a lot of success with the basketball team). Also played for the local gymkhana club when I was in Hyderabad – and then got invited by my coach to play for a local club in Kochi, didn’t go because it was the 10th Std!! Did you got to TFA??

Which position do you play in??

Don’t know if this will work–
[Men's Soccer vs. Harvard Highlights - PennAthletics.com](<a href=“University of Pennsylvania Athletics - Official Athletics Website”>University of Pennsylvania Athletics - Official Athletics Website)

And I can swim – but only to save myself from drowning!! :p

rishav17 - Thats nice. I played for the state team from 8th grade upto 12th. Captained and was vice for the school team.
TFA? The academy? Nope, at that time i just didnt have the time. To ,y parents , as much as they encouraged soccer, academics mattered most and most of these camps and academies wouldve interfered with academics. Im sure you get the idea :p. I did train with a Punjab club, even met Sunil Chhetri there :D

And Im a winger, or a defensive mid. Usually. Although i can roll in as a back as well, when needed.
You?

Id rather drown. :stuck_out_tongue:
Shouldve taken swimming classes at school, but oh no, i played table tennis -_-

Ahh nice!! Yup – TFA and stuff takes too much time. Had a lot of friends who went there from my gymkhana club team but I didn’t go because of similar reasons as you. Also I figured that football wasn’t my first calling anyway - so there was no use spending too much time on it!! To most Indian parents Academics>>>Sports.

I usually play as a defender(center back) but I can keep as well!! Most of the teams that I played in – I was selected as a defender and a reserve keeper!! :p

I too met Sunil Chhetri and few other Indian players(Sushil Singh, Renedy Singh, etc.) - when they were in Hyderabad for Nehru Cup – the final of which was shifted to Delhi. They had come to the train at the Gymkhana grounds!! :)

I would probably try doing all the hobbies I listed (I listed them here because I’m passionate about ALL of those) and might die in the process -.-

Hey,
Country: Germany
Intended Major: Psychology
Hobbies: riding horses, swimming, outdoor activities

Best of luck to everyone! :)

^ And another swimmer!! Haha!! Dartmouth’s going to have its hands full of International Swimmers!! :p

I think I skip swimming and rather join your cricket club :D

^ Haha!! Sure, if we get in!! How popular is cricket in Germany?? :p

@Keya – I too am interested in bird watching!! But as an object of photography!! :D

^ Coming to Photography, I love photography! But mainly automobile events and shows ;)

The Dartmouth Swimming Team is definitely winning the Title this year :D

rishav17 - Yes true. I knew a lot of people who joined TFA or the Airtel one. Never really did spend time on academies.

Haha, youre multitalented I see :P

Nice. I also happened to meet Bhaichung Bhutia once when the team was in Delhi to play a match at the stadium! :D

@rishav17
It is no big deal. Somehow, we compare it to golf. People think it’s boring and there are way too many difficult rules. :D

OMG I missed a lot of action today!!
A new come-er - Wie gehts @Sunny? (pretty much as far as my German goes :stuck_out_tongue: give me french or english xP )

Nice to see all the football (soccer?) players comparing their awesome achievements and shared passion :slight_smile: and it doesn’t matter if you guys aren’t great at swimming (except if you go to MIT where you have to swim 100Yards to graduate haha). I really can’t play football… always put as defender cause I am “big”, and when you see a “big” guy run after you for the ball it could be a problem… haha I was right defense… cause I could kick the ball away without accuracy :P

@Sunny and @PO
Love the fellow swimmers! I know this one guy from my school swimming for Dartmouth already… quite competitive apparently!

@Sunny
What sort of horse riding? shows, races, cross country or just leisurely for the fun of it? :stuck_out_tongue: I did a bit of polo cross once… was awesome (a lot more fun playing with a loose saddle though hahaha!)

Come on guys! We need to coax a few of these other internationals to speak up on this thread. We are after all all friendly :D

@MRU93Raith
Gut und dir? :slight_smile:
Oh my French isn’t the best, sorry. So, I think we have to write English ;D

Horse riding, just for fun right now. I participated in dressage and showjumping. Never tried polo, but your experience sounds funny :D

Thanks for the information about swimming. I propably will swim for fun and try to get in the equestrian team.
But first of all, I have to get into Dartmouth before planning my extracurriculars:D

Really you have to swim to graduate at MIT? Why? xD
I can play football only on the PS3, I totally suck on the football field :D

@Sunny
Gut danke also
Yea english is an easy compromise :P

Apparently dressage is a b****? I have a friend who might someday ride for South Africa… she does very well (well more specifically her horses) in jumping. One of the top in the country and she is only 16!

HAHA, hey we can all dream about what we will do once we get accepted right? Only danger is the slight (slight = completely traumatising) disappointment associated with it right? … xP

Yea, you know how many US unis require a distribution requirement? For MIT, you have to have 8 credit units (about 4 courses worth) of sports/similar type activities, as well as swim 100y… though no time limit on the swim. I’d imagine cause they had a rep of being “nerds” or something… so they want to expand their students’ horizons through sports? I really don’t know. Though if you want to use the pool or sailing facilities without supervision, you need to pass the 100y swim, and for the sailing - pass a 5 or 10 min tread in water… (luckily I did water polo… so a 10 min tread really is nothing :stuck_out_tongue: give me ankle weights and a couple layers of winter clothes too :smiley: )

Wait… a german who can’t play football!!! You have to be joking right? :stuck_out_tongue: haha, and even PS3 I can’t :expressionless: call of duty I’m happy with though :wink: I’ll snipe, stab, spray and even chill in those beautiful helicopters :D
