Dartmouth: Predominantly white?

Hi again guys :)
I'm Indian, and I've been really looking into D pretty closely, and I had yet another question.

I've heard that D was a mostly-white school. If there are any asians/indians on cc that are in D, or anyone for that matter, (and not to instigate a flame war here), are the race percentages an issue at all? like, do asians, indians and the like fit in fine?

I'm assuming the answer is yes, but I wanna cover my grounds before I make a decision as to ED or not.

Thanks for the help!

You wont find many Indians at Dartmouth. There are some Asians but not as many at say, Cornell or Penn.

Here is the racial breakdown of the class of 2013:

African-American 8.8%
Asian American 16.1%
Latino 8.3%
Native American 5.0%
Multi-Racial 0.9%

16% Asian is a much higher percentage than the Asian make up of the overall US population. But I don’t know how many of these are Inidans as opposed to east Asians.

I understand that, but is that a problem on campus? Like, I frankly don’t care about race, but will the fact that I’m indian greatly affect campus life?

Race is a non-issue

What exactly do you mean? It could matter for some and not for others.
A friend who recently graduated from D joked about being the only South Asian in her residence building during her first 2 years. Now, that didn’t affect her all that much but it could definitely unsettle someone else in her place.

So, choose according to YOUR preferences.

I think for a relatively small school in a small town, Dartmouth is more diverse than one might expect.

Strange. There were three South Asian people on my freshman floor (out of 20 or so).

I know lots and lots of Indians at Dartmouth. Dartmouth is 35% minority in the latest class- a higher percentage than half the Ivies. The myth that its less diverse is really outdated.

When I took my S to visit, DW and I particularly noticed well integrated groups of students on and off campus (Molly’s.) It was to us a striking difference from other campuses where we sometimes noticed groups of Asian students, Black Students, Crunchy students etc. It was just one time, but it was one of the things that was distinguishable.

Definitely agree. Dartmouth is much more integrated than most schools I’ve seen. Race just isn’t an issue.

Of S’s friends/roomies/frat brothers at D whom we have met, the largest single group are actually Indian. Others pretty much run the gamut, including AA, middle eastern, and white. I don’t think I’ve actually met any Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Thai/Vietnamese/etc students through him, but I’ve certainly seen many of them on campus. (S is white.)

The school would appear to be not only quite diverse, but generally more integrated than many others. If you want to be.

You won’t find Asians in all the frats. Asians tend to rush at only a few frats, especially at the dance party-loving Tri-Kap and the super preppy SAE, where most brothers are rich east Asians and WASPs who are majoring in Economics and looking to go into high finance & consulting.

My roommate is Indian and I’ve gotten to experience the Indian culture at Dartmouth through him. Needless to say - it rocks. There’s an Indian acapella group, Hindu groups (if you’re religious/Hindu), and there are definitely a ton of cool Indian guys and girls to meet. But, even though my roommate likes to hang out with Indians sometimes, he fits in perfectly normally with everyone. He was actually surprised by how many Indians there were at Dartmouth since he came from a predominantely white area in the US.

I don’t know as much about Asian culture, but I have a lot of asian friends and I would say that it is probably equally as vibrant.

As far as the frats go, Bear is pretty much right. I wouldn’t say that SAE and KKK are the only frats with asians, though. I know there are some asian/indians in AXA, BG, and Phi Delt.

There are Indian student’s in S’s frat, which is none of the above.

Dartmouth is remarkably diverse for a private school located up in snow country. Few New England colleges and universities outside of Boston can claim a 25% ALANA student body even though most have been making aserious effort to increase diversity.

I had two Indian guys on my freshman floor, and now have a number of friends who are Indian. Are there a ton, no. Will you be out of place or a novelty, also no.

Dartmouth is predominantly GREEN!
