I know Dartmouth owns pretty much half of New Hampshire, but do the runners out there knowif there are any good 5/6/7 mile running routes out there that are scenic, but not TOO deep in the woods? Maybe close to campus? Thanks.

Check out the cross country team site, you'll find quite a list of running routes. My favorite goes through the Hanover golf course, into the pine park and along the Connecticut River. Lovely little surprise as you leave the pines (always looked forward to getting that hill behind me). I haven't been to Hanover since the golf course re-do so don't know how much, if any, effect there was on foot traffic access. Just be mindful and courteous of the golfers!

I think the loop around Occom Pond is just shy of a mile, so a few laps there are good in a pinch, until you get your bearings. Always fun to run across into Vermont, too.

I'm a runner too! Judging from maps (and from when I visited -- ran five miles), there are lots of appropriate roads. I haven't looked into it, but I'm positive that there are lots of trails, too.

That's so funny...the presence running routes has been one (comparably unimportant) criterion of my college search. My cousin is a grad student at Yale, and when we visited New Haven, he took us up this great trail to the top of a bluff overlooking the city. I remember thinking that I could get some seriously good hill work in in New Haven.

Rip road is an awesoe route to run...

wow, i never knew college students are so worried over their health. most of my friends don't give half a darn about their health after getting into college.

Princetonwannabe, this is Dartmouth! I'd expect nothing less.

I run because I like it more than anything else. However, I probably would be one fat fuck if I didn't run, considering how much I eat.

Where (what) is Rip Road?

Great places for hiking/walking made Dartmouth even more appealing than it already was for me.

PW,
it's not worried about health...it's enjoying your healthiness, people worried about their health are more likely to be found at other unnamed-over-fed-pallid-couch-potato-schools.

Kal,

Remember, we are all healthy and Wholesome ;) at dartmouth

Hanover = Pleasantville.

I'm a patrician, I prefer fencing. :-P

And yeah, Dartmouth is the athletic, outdoorsy school.

my interviewer told me about how he would run this trail during the fall while he was there and all the pine needles that had fallen from the trees created a sort of natural astroturf for his feet.
when he said that, it just made my day. for the first time ever i honestly WANTED to go to college.

Yeah, I want to get into running again once I get to D; it'll do me good to get off the computer and stop being a lard-@$$.

Kane--you were probably on West Rock or East Rock (the latter has a lot more people and a giant stone monument on top). If you're ever in the area with a day to spend, visit Sleeping Giant S.P. in Hamden, north of New Haven. That park is the GREATEST--you can see practically all the way to Long Island from this castle-like observation tower on the summit; there's rock climbing, and more trails crisscrossing the park than you could hike in a weekend.

Not on the weekends...

i don't know about the running on the hanover country club golf course, but the sledding is pretty exciting....
