We were excited today to receive a letter inviting my daughter to interview with an alumnus for a Villanova scholarship. We were very happy about this because, due to our income, we did not expect to receive any aid from Villanova, although I don't think we can afford it without a scholarship. Could anyone give us more information about this? How many scholarships are doled out this way? How much money are we talking about? Will they still take need into consideration when awarding scholarships? I'd love it if someone who had been through this process could comment. Thanks

We are in the exact same boat as you. Got the letter today on the villanova scholarship. From the website, looks like last year was an average of $3K. I’m hoping there’s a wide range and we end up on the high side.
Good luck!

Same here. My son received the letter today as well. He is also a candidate for the Presidental Scholarship…although that is a real longshot. Praying that we receive something:) Good luck all!!

Good luck and congratulations to all!

Data from the website:
[Villanova University: Presidential Scholarships](http://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/admission/presidentialscholarships.html)

A total of 29 Presidential Scholarships totaling $1, 448, 075 were offered to freshman candidates for the 2010-11 academic year.

A total of six scholarships totaling $300,300 were offered to freshman candidates for the 2010-11 academic year, historically underrepresented students who have demonstrated leadership in their ability to make significant contributions to the academic and social cultures within their schools and communities are awarded Presidential Scholarships. Students who are African American/Black, Latino/Hispanic, American Indian/Native Alaskan, Asian/Pacific Islander or are the first in their family to pursue a college education or who come from a low income family (normally Pell Grant eligible), would be considered to be historically underrepresented.

If a student does not receive the Presidential Scholarship but is a finalist, is he/she eligible for other awards?

We recognize that Presidential Scholarship finalists are exceptional, talented students. Presidential Scholarship finalists (those who are invited to participate in the interview process) are offered the highest of our partial scholarships ($12,500/yr) and can be considered, if eligible, for other scholarships and awards through the University’s Office of Financial Assistance. Students are encouraged to complete the process of applying for need-based financial aid since nearly 80% of the University’s financial aid budget is awarded primarily on the basis of need.

Thanks, but these aren’t the Presidential scholarships. We didn’t apply for that one, and the letter indicates that those are separately considered. I am sure that the scholarships under consideration here are much less significant.

I also received the letter, and was disappointed when the math worked out to be only a few grand per kid. Hopefully, there is a scale of larger and smaller awards, because 3k really won’t affect my decision.

OOPS! My bad , sorry for any confusion

I read somewhere on last year’s threads on the Villanova Scholarship (not the Presidential)that the range of awards is $1K to $8K. I can’t find anything else on that.

Crossing our fingers for at least a Presidential interview (news out the week of 1/25). The $12500 award for that would bring Villanova into the “let’s put it in the mix” range.

Good luck to all. From the various posts, seems like a quality bunch of applicants.

Our D received a $5K Villanova Scholarship last year when she was a Freshman. I haven’t seen anywhere what the range is for these scholarships. Best of luck.

Kilgo–Would your financial situation have qualified you for “need”?

lenny2 - No. The Villanova Scholarship D received was merit-based. Unfortunately, we did not qualify for “need”.

Has anyone been contacted yet (after filling out the online form) about their Villanova Scholarship interview?

We haven’t.

Yesterday I got an e-mail saying that more people than expected had replied and requested an interview. It said they were just taking more time to match people and that student’s names would be given out by 1/28.

For those that have received a letter about interviewing for a scholarship could you share your stats. My son did not receive a letter and his stats are pretty good.

Sure.
ACT: 32
SAT II Math: 750
SAT II Chem: 700
GPA UW: 3.77
Rank: 31 of 311 at competitive school
extremely strong ec’s including ~400 hours of community service
and 6 leadership positions. I was also accepted into
nova honors.(i think my essays had a lot to do with it too)

and I got that email too. It said alumni will recieve
my contact info by today… Has anyone heard from their
alumni yet?

and that was sent from my iPod, so I apologize for the weird spacing :)

Hi Gryohon30, my son was contacted last week by an alum. He has his interview set up for tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes. The other interviews that he has gone on for other schools have been very relaxed. The alum seem really nice and welcoming. My son came home both times feeling confident and happy with the overall result. I would think that any alum that is willing to give their time is overall a person that really wants to see the best in these kids. Good luck to your daughter:)

Gryphon30, Thanks for posting your stats. My son’s are similar:
SAT: 1430
SAT II: Chemistry: 740
SAT II: History 720
6 AP’s and all Honor courses
gpa UW 4.0
Lot’s of ec’s including 4 years of football and tennis and 3 leadership positions.
I’m not sure what they are looking for …but I am surprised he has not been asked for an interview.

I got an email from my alum. He’s out of the country the next week, so mine isn’t until the 2nd week of Feb. He’s seems like a nice guy though, and accomodating(sp?) to my scheule. (also on my iPod if this turns out funky).
