I’m back again after 2 years for my 2nd daughter who is planning to apply for Business Management/Business Administration undergraduate program. She is doing her senior high school year in a community college (middle college program). We’re residents of California. She is applying for the following colleges:
UMich Ann Harbor
UC LA
UC Riverside
UC Irvine
UC SB
UC Berkeley
San Diego State University
CalPoly SLO
UMASS Amherst
Bentley College
Suffolk
Washington State University
University of Washington, Seattle
University of Washington, Bothell
We can’t afford private universities and hence the above list predominantly has public universities. Her preference is UMASS for two reasons. She grew up in MA. There is a likely chance that we relocate back to MA in summer 2019 (after she is done with her senior school year.
Question # 1: Is the above list reasonable? Should she consider any other universities?
Question # 2: This is a bit tricky and is a two-part question:
a) If she gets accepted in UMASS, and if we relocate to MA by summer 2019:
* Since she is a CA resident, she will need to pay out-of-state student fees to UMASS, which I understand.
* By summer 2020, we would’ve been MA residents for 1 year. Question is: Will she be able to pay in-state student fees from sophomore year onwards?
b) If she ends up with a UC here, and if we relocate to MA by summer 2019:
* Since she is a CA resident, she will be paying in-state student fees to UC during the freshman year.
* Will she continue to pay in-state student fees for the remainder of her under-grad program in UC or will she be required to pay out-of-state student fees, as we (parents) would no longer be CA residents?
Scenarios:
- Even if we become MA residents by summer 2019 and if she is required to pay out-of-state student fees to UMASS for all 4 years, then we would probably stay back in CA and have her accept UC. This way she’ll only pay in-state student fees.
- Same goes for UC, if she is required to pay out-of-student fees from sophomore year, then we may not relocate to MA.
I hope my questions are clear. Appreciate advice and guidance.
Thank you.
