Davidson 2023 RD applicants

Congrats to all the acceptances today!! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about Davidson – my D is a first year there now.

Accepted! Congrats to all others who were accepted!

Daughter accepted but without merit aid, it is not financially feasible (we don’t qualify for FA). Kid is most likely going to UF. Accepted there into Honors College with a small scholarship so won’t cost much. She loved Davidson but it’s hard to beat that fact that UF is essentially free.

Hard to beat free. If your DD got accepted to Duke w/o any aid, would you still choose UF?

I am new to this site and I am stunned by how many helicopter parents are on here “humble bragging” about their kids after decisions are released. These parents are in multiple threads carrying on about all the acceptances their students are receiving. Perhaps you should reflect on why you live vicariously through your child and repeatedly post throughout the work day? Was it because you were a below average or average student? Your kid got into Bowdoin, etc. Great. Stop repeatedly posting about it. Others did not. Maybe you should volunteer? Get a job?

This site is unhealthy and appears to make anxious students more anxious. I recommend that fellow students stay away from it. Discuss your acceptances, waitlists, and rejections with loved ones and school representatives, not someone who you don’t know who is on here posting away and playing college counselor.

Good luck to you all! Ignore the noise. We will all end up in the “right” place!

@bobcat92 Yes. You are new here. Three posts. Some of us have been here for over a year and have made “friends” with many other parents. We are all following each other’s children’s journeys. I’m interested in all of the kids’ progress as are many other parents here, especially the parents who frequent the Parents of 2019ers thread. We know where the kids applied, how they are narrowing down their choices and are excited to see where everyone ends up. So, that’s why parents post about their kids acceptances and denials. We aren’t “carrying on” about acceptances. We are updating the folks who have been following along for quite some time.

@homerdog ,(and all) please keep up your posts!!

This is a voluntary site. If you don’t want to read posts, then don’t. Or start your own.

As a parent I am inspired by accomplishments of other students and find a lot of good humor in the parents’ posts. The “bragging” is justified - it takes NOTHING AWAY FROM MY OWN CHILD. Perhaps because we all realize that the fields are so competitive that going to the next 500 and the next 500 after that and so on…would have made successful class makeups at Davidson or other colleges.

Vent, brag, questions, answers, commiserate, celebrate…all good and all taken with a grain of salt - always do your own due diligence! I find the timing of posts very helpful - when acceptances, rejections, special programs are coming out…and hearing high stat stories and ECs…inspiring!!!

Now back on topic… anyone with Davidson news, post!!!

@singingbear Hmm, how do Emory and Davidson compare? I live near Emory. It’s close to ATL and has a huge medical center and prominent school of Public Health and the CDC next door. I’d guess it’s a pretty good choice for anyone medical or science oriented. Emory has a lot of $$ and connections, large international population, also pretty liberal school.
I don’t know much about Davidson except that it’s an amazing LAC–one of the best in the SE. Small, cute town, pretty close to Raleigh/Durham.

@bobcat92 There are many people here from all across the country, backgrounds, etc. I wouldn’t read too much into “motivation”; rather, extend a benefit of the doubt. I feel the posts here in Davidson are not much different from other “selective” college pages (but certainly a different vibe than state college pages.) Is it bragging or elitism? I won’t judge. People share info and we learn from them (with some filtering). Most of us are operating in the dark. It is already awkward to converse or seek advice from our peers (the parents of our kid’s classmates.)

It is a doggy dog world and it is stressful and painful. And it will only get more competitive. That’s one good thing about competing for a spot (school, sport, orchestra, drama, band, etc) We all learn that no matter how much effort and energy we put in, there is always someone who is faster, smarter, stronger, etc. There are kids who can play D1 sports and become an engineer or a doctor. And often, it is unclear why you were left out and someone got chosen. My kid has to learn about this real world and how to deal with it. Is it affirmative action vs reverse discrimination? Is it your interview skills? Is it your personality? Is it lack of networking? Is it lack of hooks? Did you overshoot and apply to the wrong places? Were you depending on your great test scores and grades, EC, leadership, etc but lacked specialty? This self-inventory is stressful and it doesn’t get easier as they move to grad schools, jobs, relationships, etc. It is stress even for parents going through sickness, death, loss of jobs, and other transitions. But that is life. (Sorry for being a bit depressing.)

My kid, like most kids here, experience more “failure” (semi-finalist, waitlist, etc.) than success. That’s the expected outcome for most kids who reach and try. This site has allowed my kid to feel not so alone as an “average excellent” student. Oh, by the way, my kid just texted me her acceptance by Davidson (!!!) Despite the good news, my kid likely won’t be able to attend due to $$$. We will save this decision for this weekend and let my kid enjoy some “success” for the moment.

@matchfit Be sure to wait to see how much money Davidson offers you in their financial aid package. They have really good financial aid.

@singingbear Davidson and Emory are completely different. Davidson is only 2000 students and has a requirement to live on campus all 4 years. The social scene is completely within the 4 walls of the campus and somewhat insular. The focus is on a liberal arts education and students don’t declare a major until the end of sophomore year. There are no separate schools (e.g., no business school) and no graduate programs. Much of the junior class leaves first semester for study abroad. There are no live-in fraternities or sororities and women join eating houses, which are available to anyone. It’s a predominantly christian environment, but has done more to promote other religions in recent years. The president, Carol Quillen, is a respected historian and rising star in higher ed. The atmosphere can be quite stressful, and students are told not to expect As. B+ appears to be equivalent to an A in other schools.

Just to clarify a previous poster’s comment that Davidson is not near Raleigh/Durham, but is quite close to Charlotte.

@ilovebillyjoel & @klbmom18 Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! Much appreciated! My D met her college counselor today. She told my D Emory would be also a good fit because Emory is very good for science/research, especially Public Health which my D has much interest in. She’s also having a hard time to advise because Davidson is one of her favorites and she strongly recommended my D to apply. Emory financial Aid is very good. I’m waiting for that from Davidson. We love both! We are on the west side of the country but there are direct flights to Atlanta and Charlotte.

@singingbear – how about Davidson for undergrad and Emory for an MPH? :0. More seriously, they are both great options. I hope she can visit both before making a decision!

Hi @AlmostThere2018 ! I know you have a daughter at Davidson and love it very much  Actually your suggestion would make lots of sense!! Hopefully we get a chance to visit Davidson in April. I don’t know why we missed Davidson. We visited Emory and Duke last year. Davidson is between these two but we flied! lol

For those waitlisted like my daughter here is very helpful info: https://admission.davidson.edu/apply/WaitListFAQ.pdf

My D was waitlisted at Davidson – she gave up her spot because she got into Barnard, Wellesley, Grinnell, Emory, Smith and a couple others

Congrats to all who were admitted to Davidson and other schools. My D was also admitted. Her older sister is currently a sophomore there so we are very happy to have them both at the same school for all the obvious reasons. Additionally we are in Colorado and it makes for much easier logistics as Frontier has inexpensive daily flights to & from CLT. She was also admitted to CU Boulder, UVA & USC, rejected from Vandy.

Good luck everybody!!

I went to the prep school that I think you are referencing too…lol

Anyone heard about if Davidson matches the merit scholarship from the peer colleges??
