well :(
Just got my need based aid estimate back from davidson, and it was definitely, definitely not what i was expecting. financial aid websites say that generally colleges look for students to use a certain percentage of their assets per year on paying for school... apparently davidson took that percentage to be much higher for me.. they estimated my need aid at 0 :(
At this point, that definitely takes me off the ED list. I'm trying to talk to the admissions and aid offices more to give me some hope/courage, enough so taht I would be able to apply early, or at least have a hope that i'd be able to pay for davidson if I got accepted.

I dunno.. i've read that they are non-negotiable because they guarantee to meet 100% of need. So basically, if they don't give you any, they don't think you have need.

I'm not sure what to say. I'll have to talk to some people about it and see if they have any ideas on how to express it to them. But yea, this is an estimate. I dunno if they take it serious enough to be willing to negotiate like that. Thing is, it is all I can find out before applying ED to see if I have to start going into debt to go there...

I'm just curious as to what all of your responses to essay prompt C, pertaining to the books you have read, looked like. As in the amount of books and types of books. I guess I just thought of it as an odd question. I think of myself as well-read but it would be nice to compare my list to others. I think I have 34 books on my list.

Yeah I had a question about that too.
Do we include the author as well... they're incredibly unspecific
on the common app.
Oh and on my list I think I have 38. But I am having difficulty remembering all my books...
a year is a long time ago.. so maybe more... maybe less

It's really around 30 books for leisure. Which is more palatable. And 8 books assigned. So sometimes I would be reading 2 books at a time. But during the summer I tore through books like nobody's business.

I think my book list had 34 on it, 20 of which were for school. I think as long as you don't just have a long list of Gossip Girl, Uglies, Twilight, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, etc. by themselves, you should be fine. Mine ranged from Democracy in America to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; from The World is Flat to The Prince. As long as you show that there are SOME books of substance on there, it's worthwhile to submit the book-list.

I had mixed feelings about that book. It seemed every other line he was trying to throw in little mentions of how he'd been playing golf in Beijing or dining with the president of some east Asian country, and then I felt as if he made the point of his book in the prologue and stated all of his evidence and ideas upfront ... making the last three hundred pages unnecessary. That said, I liked his ideas and I thought they were interesting. Just was not a fan of the presentation. I read Friedman's column every few weeks in the NY Times ... always hit or miss. Always.
