A Question I can Answer!
I talked to one of the admissions counselors (the one for my region) about word length because the Common App doesn't specify length while the Davidson PDF App does. And she said that she isn't going to stop reading an essay if it exceeds a word count but 2-3 pages double spaced is good. And for the short responses she says keep it to 1 page double spaced. She said it was important to be able to convey your ideas concisely.

oh crap. my honor code essay is like a page and a quarter. I just don't know what to get rid of. My GC, who went to Davidson, said it was good and he doesnt know what to cut either.

Have you gone through and eliminated extraneous words? Like in the sentence "I love Davidson's Honor Code because it provides an extremely trusting environment in which all students can learn and not worry about getting there wallet or laptop stolen." (28 words)

I love Davidson's Honor Code because it allows for a trusting environment where students can learn and not worry about losing their belongings. (23 words)

If you could cut five words in five sentences that's enough of a chunk to make a difference. And if you post in on the common app single spaced then it will look smaller.

I know it may seem childish or pedantic for me to be giving you examples and stuff but when I had a peer edit my essay she showed me stuff like that and I got my essays to fit in the criteria. So it works.

Nah -- seriously, if it's that little of a difference, don't cut. Instead of making it double-spaced, make it 1.5, or even just leave it. They really won't care that much.

My Dad and I got into a big fight, again, about Davidson and Early Decision. He says I only want to apply early so I can be impatient. And I say the chances of me getting in are higher because of a smaller applicant pool. And he says that's not enough. I need some good reasons why Davidson ED would be better than waiting for RD in April.

Higher chances, yes, that's the big one (admit rate this year is projected at under 20% -- whereas for us it was 25%). Less anxiety. Invites to both special weekends for admitted students (Decision Davidson is in the spring). You only technically have one application, if you get in -- so fewer applications and application fees. Fewer schools to tour if you get in (less money on gas/plane tickets to visit other schools). Etc.

And it will probably benefit you. They'll read yours closer to the beginning of the pile and they'll be less weary of reading at that point. So, kudos!
