Davidson vs. Wake Forest

I'm looking for a LAC that is good for anthro and psych. Both Davidson and Wake Forest seem to have good programs, but is one better than the other? Or is there one that is better than both of them?

My wife and I are both proud Wake alumni, but in all honesty I have to say that Davidson is a very special place - more selective, more intimate, and more personal than Wake.

Well…Wake and Davidson are both great choices. Wake is larger and more research oriented than Davidson. I had several people in my graduating class go to both schools. My friends who went to Wake liked the LAC/research feel of the school – though a number of them took out a lot of loans to go there. Davidson, on the other hand, has a no-loan financial aid policy. One of my best friends ended up choosing Davidson. He enjoyed his experience (socially and academically) but he said it felt too small for him at times. Honestly, I don’t think either school has a significant advantage over the other in terms of job prospects. I think you should apply to both and go with the one you feel most comfortable with/whichever one gives you the best financial package.

Davidson has an exceptional Psychology program, one of the best in the country according to some of its peers. I am not sure about Anthropology. The good news is you can’t make a mistake choosing between Wake and Davidson.

I agree with gadad. I too am very fond of both schools, but I think Davidson gets the nod in selectivity and academics. I got a very “warm and fuzzy” feeling at Davidson that I’ve rarely gotten at any other college before or since.

That said, I remember visiting the anthropology museum on Wake’s campus a few years ago and thought it was excellent. Nowhere near the scale of Penn or Berkeley’s, of course, but very impressive for a school of Wake’s size. It also has more/better archaeology facilities than Davidson and links with the archaeology research at Old Salem, if that’s your thing.

Are there any other LAC’s worth looking into besides these ones? (For anthro and psych)

William & Mary is a peer of Davidson and Wake Forest.

My D looked at a lot of LAC’s that were known for the strength of their Psychology programs. She ended up selecting Furman University. The Psychology department there is one of the best in the country with a lot of research and internship opportunities. Unfortunately, they do not have an Anthroplogy major.

Franklin & Marshall, her second choice, has a very strong Psychology program and also has an exceptional Anthropology department. It may also be worth a look. Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone!

You can’t go wrong with either-one is a well-established small university & one is a highly esteemed liberal arts college. You would be surprised with what you can do with an anthro major today. Go for it. It’s a great subject.
